I have a killer job in a killer location with a killer apartment 4 minutes walk away and I'm tax free....I have great references and all my papers in hand (minus the medical). Unfortunatley my contract ends in early October and it seems I am not going to find something comparable for October, so I am considering Japan. I look on ALL the websites constantly and email all the local recruiters so YES I HAVE BEEN TRYING HARD FOR A GOOD 2 MONTHS TO BE 1ST IN LINE.
Although I heard Japan's money is worth less / it pays less, most don't give free apartments, and they're really tiny (mine is new and big now). I have heard that they are very happy to learn English privately....Its totally legal, 50-$100 an hour with a retaurant meal often thrown in ...you can put fliers with your face on it anywhere....you can quit a job at any time and still keep your visa....no 30 days and no release letter necessary....I heard they are more fun and nicer, and the food is better.... I can't seem to find THE MAIN Japan teaching CLASSIFIED ADS site....and I can't seem to really get a good feel for the situation there.
Previously I heard food in grocery stores is horrendously expensive, the pay is not good, you're paying a high rent for a shoebox...are were really anal and strict and into micro managing....so I am quite confused and don't know what to do or beleive. Can anyone give me some answers please?
I want to try to look into it as fercly as I have been doing for Korea, but if its just a worse option, I won't. I'm trying to get a leg up, not down. Thanks! |

Why can't you just renew your contract? |

1) Try the online subscription service ohayo sensei. It's been around formore than a decade, is very reliable, and typically lists the mid- to high-level paying jobs with 2-5 years teaching experience. However, Japan is slowly becoming more selective, and most schools now require intermediate knowledge of the Japanese language, ESL certification (CELTA preferred), or AT LEAST having lived in Japan for a year or two.
2) The downside is that it's becoming harder and harder to get a decent job in Japan without being there. You could always go the Aeon/Westgate/etc. route for a few months to get your foot in the country, but the glory days of easy ESL money in Japan have passed. Sure, the periodic $50-100/hr. gig comes around every once in a while, but most PT hourly work is still in the $25-40 range.
Good luck!

I WISH! The current Principal started like 5 months ago. After the other one retired. The new one went around firng people and installing evil gargoyles. He was very resentful that he inherritted a 3 year after school program that serves 5% of the school and he loses a classroom....and got no bribe to agree to the whole thing. He wants to kill the program and at the very least, not endorse/sponsor the teacher. He only wants F2 or F4 which won't be hard in my opinion but he thinks it is an obstacle. He never had a complaint about me and told me I was a good teacher and do a good job. I'm pretty pissed. |

I won't work for a chain, too hellish. I knew about the ohayo thing....thought it sounded weird....a biweekly newsletter?!? What decade is this? I guess I have to get into that though. I have none of the other qualifications you mentioned. And gaijinpot is dead as a doornail. I'll also see if I can get approved to write on the Japan board. Dave likes you to apply for each one seperately. How convenient! |

I have been on that site many times. It is far from dead. I get daily emails from them with new job offerings in various sectors. |

Youll need to go in with a chain school to get your Visa easily....once your in, get out in a couple months and enjoy the rest of your year. But its only a year and getting a new Visa will be hard, either youll need to find another school and do the same thing again or find a J-girl.
Privates are unlikely to be scored at 50-100 bucks these days.
look at more like 20-50 really......
Apartments aint free, flights aint covered, and apartments can be a bitch to secure and you gotta pay alot of coin up front, kinda like korea really.
You could go for the JET program, but it takes a while to go through application process, but theyll pay for flights and apartments, only thing is you dont choose where you live and it WILL be a small town.
Japan is more expensive than Korea, but not the crazy money drain its made out to be, it can be easy to save money and have a good time while your there. You can live on 150,000 Yen a month covering your bills etc. But its all relative to where you live ya know.
I lived there last year.
have a look at letsjapan.org also, should be able to find a little more info.
But gaijinpot.com is your best bet for available jobs and information. |

The part time work advertised on those sites is not where you are going to make your money. The people who advertise for pt teachers there are taking a cut, and that's why the pay is low. I had friends who were doing this exact thing. They landed some contracts and would farm out the work. They would quite often make as much or more than the teacher. You need to go there and network, meet people who then leave and pass on privates etc. That's how you make good coin.
