In a bit of a pickle. It isn't to do with a background check for an E2, but I figured it's the same process essentially so this info would help those who are in a similar boat.
My husband needs to get fingerprints done on the FBI fingerprint card for a background check. It's the official card with all the right spaces and everything. We are in Korea, so the cards were sent to us, so we can do the prints here.
We went to the local police station (we're about an hour from Seoul) with a co-worker in tow to help with any issues and were told that they will not do it. The police said they need to have a letter of some sort, from the authority that wants the fingerprints, asking them (the Korean police) to do the prints. This is apparently standard for all the police stations in Korea.
Has any one gotten their prints in Korea, at the police station? Did you have some sort of referral from the FBI or some equivalent? Or were these cops just making up the rules?
If it really is impossible through them, is there another way? I've seen a rumour on this forum that the Yongsan base will be able to do it for him. He is a citizen. Would they do it on the weekend? In the interim, I guess contacting someone at the base would be a good idea so I'll get right on that too.
Any help would be appreciated, because apparently time is of the essence. Thanks in advance. |

UPDATE!
But nothing positive. After many phone calls and much begging and pleading, my school director tells me that there is no way the police will do it. It is the same form that you use for background checks for immigration BUT because it is not for immigration, they won't do it.
Apparently they have a list of things they can do, quite specific obviously, and the only way they'll finger print a foreigner is if it is for a CBC for immigration. So that's positive for any one who needs that done.
But it doesn't help me. Any one have some advice? More details from the military base?
As an aside, I don't understand why it's such an issue to do the fingerprints for us. They're simple ink smudges and take a few minutes. Boggles the mind. |

THATS A SACK OF BULL!!!
I got fingerprints from the Police one month ago. You have to go to the big station in you gu or dong... The local station referred me to the one in Jangnim. The stations that look like there huge and important will do them. Inside of them there is an office of foreign affairs and they will do it for free. I had to wait an hour and talk to some people, but the eventually did it. Your director is incompetent on this issue. |

| Also, I used the printed version available online for the prints. Police were fine with it. FBI accepted it. Do a google and print off the card on normal paper. Good enough. Costs 18 dollars to send in. |

Thanks, I think, for this advice. I'm sure it will help some one trying to get CRC for a visa but it doesn't help me.
As I said, the prints are not for a CRC to send to immigration. The police did say that they do do those fingerprints gladly but will not do them for other purposes. I think my director handled it really competently actually, another director would have done much less, considering the matter has nothing to do with her, Korea or her business.
So, questions still stands, who has had it done at the Yongsan garrison? |

| I had no problem getting it done at a Korean police station with that FBI form. |

| Maybe this is an odd question, but why don't you tell them it IS for immigration? |

Exactly.
Go to another police station with the form.
Do NOT take your director.
Tell them you need prints for an E2 visa.
Get the prints. |

| I went to my central police station. They were very nice and did 3 sets of prints for me. No problems as I told them what it was for. Goto a different station. They are tripping. Oh, and I used the online FBI forms too. |
