Apparently, the murderer was a Chinese immigrant to Canada. News came out that the family was aware the guy had issues.
Yeah, to Immigration!!!

I'm glad he wasn't Korean. When I saw the name Lee I was a bit worried but then his given name didn't sound Korean.
And immigration is a good thing.
Should an immigrant to Korea have a problem with immigration to Canada? |

I do. I notice that you are giving "Canada" and "Canadians" a pass on this. (I agree, incidentally.) I believe that had this murder happened in America, if not you, then others here for certain, would have phrased this sentence that you constructed, above, a little differently. And there would not likely have been any "I don't know what to says." People would have alleged and accused and all sorts of things without even thinking twice about it. |
Look at the murder per capita rate in Canada and compare it to other countries.
In addition, walk through just about every major Canadian city and tell me how many areas are no go zones.
Now Canada does have its problems, but in relative terms (and I enforce the phrase relative), Canada is a very safe country and violent acts are still surprising to us. |

So what exactly do you suggest the Canadian government should have done differently?
There are over 200,000 immigrants coming to Canada every year. And it is a process to come to the country. However, unfortunately certain individuals will slip through the cracks.
Surely after living and working in Korea you've become aware of the problems of a host country blaming the actions of your entire group (i.e. English teachers) on the actions of a few bad apples? |

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Manitoba (AP) -- A Chinese immigrant accused of stabbing, beheading and cannibalizing a man on a Greyhound bus in Canada pleaded in court Tuesday for someone to "please kill me," and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation...
When asked again by the judge after the recess if he wanted a lawyer, Li shook his head and then quietly said "please kill me," The Canadian Press reported.
Li's remark was heard by reporters and confirmed by court clerks, but was not acknowledged by the judge. He is due back in court Sept. 8.
Officers at the scene of the bus attack discovered a plastic bag containing an ear, nose and part of a mouth in Li's pocket...
Thirty-seven passengers were aboard the Greyhound from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Some were napping and others watching "The Legend of Zorro" when Li attacked McLean, allegedly stabbing him dozens of times, according to witnesses. As horrified passengers fled from the bus, Li severed McLean's head, displaying it to some of the passengers gathered outside the bus, witnesses said. He then began hacking at the body, they said.
A police officer at the scene reported seeing the attacker hacking off pieces of the victim's body and eating them, according to a police tape leaked on the Internet. |
This exceeds mere insanity.

| This Chinese fellow knows he committed a horrible act against another human being, and he wants to be killed as a result. I am not a big fan of the death penalty, it can be a tool for revenge, but I can understand people calling for reinstating the death penalty in Canada to remove this person from society permanently, so the tax payers won't have to pay for his subsistence. However, you can argue for the killing of all kinds of prisoners as being a drain on society. Is there a way this person could have been prevented from immigrating? I don't think he had a record that we know of in his country. Most Chinese people obviously are rather safe people and not violent. This person is an anomaly. Canada doesn't have empaths testing people for mental disease to bar them from entering. No country does. This is a horrible tragedy that's part of the human condition where some people somehow snap and go crazy. |

| crazy people come in all shapes colors and sizes. they live in every country. this really shouldn't become a debate about immigration. crazy people will do crazy things; it's unavoidable. All you can really do is count your blessings that you weren't the poor chap who got snuffed. |

It would only be an immigration issue if he had psychological problems before coming here which wouldn't connect to his race, of course, but rather to checking the immigrants whether they are fanatical Muslims, former gangsters from the Caribbean or a nut job from China with psychiatric problems or a former German Nazi. I don't have enough information to say we shouldn't look at immigration. |

That seemed to be the implied theory in the Free Press article I posted on the previous page. |

The Winnipeg Free Press speculates that there may be more to this case than originally met the eye...

The seeds for Tim McLean's brutal murder on board a Greyhound bus last week may have been planted when the accused killer, Vince Li, spent nearly an hour chatting up the victim's female co-worker during their ride through western Manitoba, the Free Press has learned.
Li, 40, took a seat at the front of the bus beside the woman after getting on board in Brandon. The pair chatted and were even seen smoking cigarettes together during a rest stop.
As the bus resumed its ill-fated journey towards Winnipeg, Li suddenly moved to the back of the bus and sat down beside McLean, who was listening to his headphones and apparently asleep.
It was just moments later that Li allegedly began stabbing McLean repeatedly with a large hunting knife, eventually severing his head, defiling his body and holding police at bay for a couple of hours after passengers scrambled off the bus.
McLean's family and friends don't believe Li's change-of-seating was a coincidence. And they question why he was charged with second-degree murder and not first-degree murder, which indicates planning and premeditation.
"I have this unbelievably strong feeling that him sitting beside Stacy had something to do with this," McLean's former girlfriend, Alexandra Storey, told the Free Press in an exclusive interview Monday.
Tim and Stacy had become friends while working together at various western Canadian fairs through North American Midway Entertainment. They were travelling together to Winnipeg -- although seated separately in different areas of the bus -- and had planned to meet up with a mutual friend in the city before all heading back out to British Columbia.

Storey is also haunted by a series of text messages McLean sent to her as he made his way through Manitoba. Her ex-boyfriend -- who she remained very close to -- mentioned that some people were doing ecstasy on the bus.
Could Li have been one of those people?
Some medical experts say the combination of a powerful stimulant drug such as ecstasy, combined with pre-existing mental health conditions, could trigger a violent episode.
Storey isn't buying it.
"Even if he was doing drugs, it wouldn't make him do something like that. There's no excuse. The guy is (an alleged) cannibal. I don't care how sick he was," she said.

This is ALL very interesting. Wish I had more time to read more into this...but wanted to highlight this...any follow up on any of this?
The drug allegation and the premeditated part...very interesting. I'm surprised another page went by and no one commented on any of this. |

I find it very odd that someone would want to stab someone numerous times, decapitate them, and then proceed to eat portions of them while hig on E.
Alcohol perhaps, but E? |

1. Li Sold his laptop (brand-new Acer 4200) for $60, plus a bag. (Initially it's placed a hand-written sign said "$600 for sale)
2. In the laptop contains more than 20 rsums, each tailored to a specific job application. One was for a police service, one for McDonald's, one for Wal-Mart.
3. Inside also contains a dozens of photos that he assumed were taken by Mr. Li, including several of a black military plane that he thought were taken by an amateur in mid-air. There were photos of a formal Chinese military parade, and others of Chinese models in clothes, and some of mountains in British Columbia.
4.
A letter in Mandarin, translated with Google's translator, seemed to be addressed to someone in China. It said he was happy to be free, living under beautiful, free skies, but that he felt guilty for leaving China, and that everything in Canada was not as he expected, Mr. Beatty said. |
What to make of all that? |
