Hi,

I really want to buy some stuff from gmarket.co.kr but I get stuck when I go to pay for the items. Can someone give me instructions on how to pay for items on this site? I can read Korean but I just don't understand what I am reading.

There is an English tab at the top. You can register there. Tell them what bank you bank with. When you order stuff, they will send you a text message with a bank number to transfer to.

Also, you can search for stuff on the Korean site, then when you go over to the English site, it will show you the most recent things you have clicked on, then you can purchase those things in English.

Thank you for your help. I am registered with gmarket but when I go to pay for the stuff the language changes to Korean.

I can't give you step by step instructions off the top of my head. But I can give you a few pointers.

While I tried to register using the English pages, it wouldn't accept some of the info, so I had to have a teacher help me in the Korean side to finish the registration.

You have to pick two sets of passwords. Remember them. You can order with the first, but you need the second to complete the payment -- go figure.

You can transfer money for each order, or you transfer a bigger sum and use it as needed. But you need to release the money from your transfer for payment. Sometimes you don't, but sometimes you won't get your order, either.

You should be able to complete the ordering and payment in English. You can use any browser, but it looks funny on any browser but IE, which kinda sucks. If you are flipping into Korean, make sure you have cookies enabled.

After you get the order, you can log on and rate the item. You have like two days to do this, so chances are you won't know whether it is any good. So the ratings are pretty much worthless. Except they give you some sort of token credit points for each review.

The more I look, the more I find, but there's some stuff you just can't get here. Everything I've ordered has arrived in good shape. No semi-used open box stuff, or anything. But some orders have not been filled precisely right. So check your stuff.

If you're not in Seoul, you need to learn how to use GMarket. You can find a lot more stuff, and the prices are often close, or closer, to back home than the EMarts and Lottes. I see EMart now has a presence on GMarket, though.

The site is confusing, to say the least, so don't feel bad if you're having trouble. It would be nice if the designers would bother to ask a native English speaker for feedback or advice. But I think that's against the law in Korea.

Let's see. I think this is how I do it - I don't have anything to pay for right now. I've got it set up to sign in automatically with Netscape, just click on the "Sign in" on the top, and click or hit return.

Then click on customer service. You get a pop up. Make sure you have pop ups enabled for this site.

Then it gets confusing, to say the least. Just keep on hitting likely buttons till you find the payment confirmation. Or try "track packages." It's not real intuitive. I usually have to hunt around each time.

You could read the FAQs. Oh, and it may prompt you to install some software, which I don't think is necessary for bank transfers, so ignore it.

Out of curiosity, I registered for the English gmarket site and successfully placed a small order. Here is what I found:

In the foreign ID section you have to enter your name exactly as it appears on your ARC. I'll be damned if they don't have us all in their registry. Spooky Twisted Evil

The telephone section is screwed up and each field will only except four digits, even if the correct number only has three digits. So, for instance, instead of entering 041, enter 0041. I tried it three times and it worked the third time when I did it this way.

Those were the only problems I had. I paid with Paypal, though, because I want to see if my order arrives before I drop my Korean debit card. I received an email saying that my order went through, though so I think it's okay.

If you are unable to get anywhere with it and don't have a Korean friend that can help, PM me and I'll make the transaction for you.

It's difficult when you pay using credit card cause that part is only in Korean and the secure software won't let you copy and paste so you can't use a translator site to translate what info they want, and they seem to require lots of different number/id. But I've found that at the beginning of that all you have to do is put your CC # in and last 4 digit. Then on the next box that comes up you can choose at the top to bypass all the number ids (there are many) and just use your online banking certificate for the id and bang ur done.

I asked my wife how she always pays and she always uses the Korean Bank Transfer option. She never uses her credit card or Korean debit card on the site directly. She goes to the bank machine and does it there.

By the way, Real Reality, I think this is the first time I have actually seen a comment made by you without using some quotes to sources. For awhile I thought you were simply a computer program that had a vast supply of articles prepared for when certain keywords surfaced.
