Mkay,
I'm 90% of the way to buying an asus eee, but it hinges on the concept that Ima use a USB-powered external dvd drive to play movies in-flight.
Would power-drain be an issue?
If so, maybe I'll go with one of those more expensive jobbies with an 80 gig moving parts drive (could put 10 movies on one of them).
Thx in advance |

Absolutely, especially when the USB device is a hard drive. So if the battery life of the eeePC is 2 hours, connecting an external hard drive is going to drive the battery down to an hour. eeePC is only good for around the house, in bed etc.
Now the 1000H is a different story and if the all-day-battery is as promised then by all mean get it.
Otherwise best to get a portable media player (PMP). |

Thanks for the advice.
Following your advice and an afternoon of shopping, I now have the 1000H.
My impressions:
-Battery is going at 4 hrs without shifting it down into the lower modes
-Keyboard is a bit cheesy
-I'd trade the 1" frame for more screenspace
Those are the negatives.
On the positive side:
-weight is awesome
-keyboard is not far off a standard
-looks nice
Having looked around and from advice from a guy who had one of the 1st gen VAIO's, I just couldn't bring myself to buy the 901, which came down to:
-eye-crunching screen
-finger-crunching keyboard
I was married to a flash drive before I started, but reviews online indicate that 1) purely based on usage, they don't last longer 2) in a test on this model, they gave 30 mins more battery time and 3) as the "in-thing", they're overpriced atm.
As an owner of a Sager desktop replacement, it seems I'm getting most of what I paid a mint for 2 years ago minus the graphics card for cheap and in an extremely pleasant package.
Thanks for your advice,
-NM |

Cool man, make sure you head down to eeeuser.com, pretty good site for all the eeePCs.
Which Sager did you have? They were awesome back in the days. |

The 5320. It's been sweet, but sadly already at the end of it's era. If you followed the discussions of it, there was that chirping sound on headphones, but I'd only hear it if i didn't have anything else running in the background.
Actually, one gripe: product support in the UK was crap. No one would answer the phone. They wanted me to send it back to the US. We got in a fight, I sent one email out to Sager's affiliates in the US, China, and Taiwan. Next day, the phone was answered promptly and my problem was resolved as fast.
So, I think there are some considerations if you're traveling a lot, especially if it's far from Sagerland.
But still, twas and still is an awesome machine.
I hope things go the same for this lil' guy. It should, since I basically just wanna watch some movies on the plane and wi-fi when I'm at hotels. |

Ah baller. I saw that in Tokyo (different brand though) but couldn't afford it, the other version had 2 hard drives and was mammoth. They were one of the first to sport DVI output too. I'm guessing you got the Pentium M 1.7.

What is the battery rating on the 1000H? Just saw this :

Make sure you disable pagefile to stop Windows taking up more space than it should. I used Nlite. Ubuntu isn't bad on this thing either which I also have dualbooting with XP.
Oh and check this out :

I went with 2.0. I actually thought I was going to install a second hard drive, but when the time came, I realized the open bay was where the DVD went.

Asus is probably watching modders with keen interest. |

According to the chat, that's just streaming over from the big pc, though.
This seems like the real deal:

I wasn't really planning on gaming with it, but who knows.
If anything, I might stick Civ on there.
I'm wondering a bit about battery care, as I haven't really tried to keep a laptop battery in good condition. Right now, I'm removing the battery if I have an outlet handy. Is that the sensible thing to do? |

Yeah if you can help it use direct power instead of the battery and if you're not going to be using the batt for a while then keep it at around 40% charge and in a cool place. It will last longer.
I hardly use my 9 cell battery for my Dell. |
