|
|
Every winter here on the lovely ESL cafe there is a significantly large group of posters who claim that they haven't turned on their ondol yet; that the winters aren't that cold; and that people who complain about the cold weather are ridiculously weak and should man up. There's even a thread called "The great ondol sweepstakes" where people can boast about how late in the year (or early in the next year) they finally turn on their heating system.
Well this post is for the opposite crowd. This is for people who aren't pussies about the summer. This is for people who love the warm weather and don't get their panties in a bunch about it being above 30c with 100% or so of humidity.
Real men don't need aircon. Aircon is for weak little girls who're afraid of melting. I love the summer. It's deliciously warm and, for 2 months or so, I don't even have to wear a shirt at home. I love these torrid months of warmth, moisture and crying Canadians and Minnesotans.
This year I'm in an apartment without air conditioning. My girlfriend tried to persuade me to buy a unit today, but honestly, I don't need it. Sure, I finally turned the fan on for a bit of a breeze, but I don't need artificial cooling to keep me comfortable. I love the heat.
Is anyone else with me? I shall be the FIRST to turn on my ondol in the winter, but summer.. it's mine.
Are there any other summer tough guys out there? There are about 500 winter tough guys on this message board, but are there any men who can handle the opposing heat? Or am I a lone stud in a world of melting men who cry at a hint of warmth?
It is currently 32c in my apartment (5c more than outside..) and I am, as McDonalds says, Lovin' It. |

It ain't the heat that does me in...it's the humidity. I've lived in places that get hotter than Korea. No problem. But the humidity is the kicker. It is bad enough being drenched when I walk outside for 15 minutes and when I look like I've been in the sauna for 30 minutes by the time I get to school. But to have to put up with it in my apartment. No thanks. I'll stick with the aircon, thank you very much. |

Our place is on the top of a sanga building under the roof. It's hotter inside than outside. It's like the average sauna in the jimjilbang. Wife won't let me spend the money on an aircon but.
I don't mind a bit of heat, but waking up every night in the middle of the night with slimy skin is no fun. I can't even be a man as touching my wife is like touching a hot air balloon.
I sweat while in my house even in front of the fan.
It's like Hell. |

Are you as much of a pussy in February when it's ridiculously cold? =)
Just kidding.. I'm sure it's jolly warm. But if your wife can hack it... |

Living in Bangkok, I never turn on the A/C. There is just no reason to do so. I have gotten used to the heat, and my wife gets cold if I try to turn it on. Hell, we don't even go to A/C restaurants most of the time. For the recored, Thailand is quite a bit warmer than Korea. |

You're a real man! Good on you!
But, for the record, Bangkok is substantially cooler than Korea right now in 'real feel' terms. Especially at night. I know because i was there this week.. and spent the whole last month in the country (in Issan). Coming back to Korea has been a real reminder of what warm weather is.. and I love it =) |

Ummmm...no. No. And no.
I'm a wuss. I admit it. I say it loud and clear. I am a wuss. I may well be the first to turn on the ondol in the fall and the first to turn on the air con in the summer. I think the supreme argument for a lack of a governing deity is the arrangement of the continents. People are meant to live in 82F weather year round. That's just the way it is. Anything above 82F is hot and unreasonable and much below that and it is barbarically cold. This is a non-negotiable statement. [/quote] |

I was burning in 55C high humidity in the omani desert; Korea is nothing.
Ooooooh but I do love my aircon |

I'm with you on this one. I have used the aircon twice this summer, once when I had guests and once to help speed up the drying of some clothes. It's also 32 in my place and I don't even have the fan on. My canadian friends blast it all day and night and then complain of sinus infections and shit. It's not like I come from a hot country either. Summers in my country are cooler than Canadian summers (other than eskimo territory probably) and I LOVE IT. Man up you Canuck vaginas. |

I have my aircon on 24/7. In fact, it hasn't been turned off for about a week. Sure, I may kill a few polar bears, but it sure beats sweating my ass off every day. |

I like the cold. I like to sit outside or on the verandah wrapped in rabbit with a coffee and an ebook.
Apart from being on the beach in Saipan, the heat makes me insane. It exacerbates the stinky smells here and only the insects love it when they grow to enormous dimensions and fly around and bite yah.
The cold merely invigorates.
PS: Wait until you are in your forties. Your body starts letting you feel shit that you never knew you would feel. Summer is hideous. I'm not a puㅆy - I'm a mountain man. Bring me the chill. |

I have it on a few hours a day, so as when I'm changing post shower I'm not sweating. Being cold makes me much more uncomfortable than being hot, which is why i like the korean summers. The last week or so has been very pleasant in daegu. |

Aircon is for total gays. I wish that when you turned an aircon on, a recorded message would remind you of your total puss-dom, and some sort of mechanical arm would slap a ballerina skirt on you. If you've used the aircon more than 2 days this year, you might as well change your address to 123 Vagina Street because you're an outright woman. The gay kind! |

This summer hasn't been so bad for me. My nose an throat feel a lot better now. I haven't used the air-con at home much at all. I never turn it on anyway, someone else always does.
It was hotter at school with 32 kids last month, we got to use the air-con most of the day but I wondered how clean they were (air-con units not kids). |

I have turned mine on a couple of times, but always use the 1 hour button. Most times. like now, I just open the windows and use the fan.
The most uncomfortable thing about summer are those sticky puddles of Canadians laying around in Itaewon. When you get them between your toes they just stay there.
I do use my ondol, but not that much. I like wearing my winter clothes.
