Quote:
Spain's Basketball Federation has published a good luck advert for their men's team, the world champions, in which they stand pulling at the sides of their eyes in a slit-eyed gesture.

There is no obvious intention to upset their Olympic hosts in Beijing, but the irresponsible picture is likely to cause controversy and could be interpreted so as to lead to accusations of racism.

Spanish sport has been mired in rows over racism in the last few years. In November 2004 black English footballers were subjected to relentless racial barracking from home supporters in a match in Spain. Before the World Cup there were calls for Luis Aragones, then Spain's football coach, to be sacked after he called Thierry Henry a "black shit". And last year Lewis Hamilton suffered racist abuse during testing for the Spanish grand prix near Barcelona.

So how exactly is that picture racist?

Childish? Yes. In poor taste? Sure. Racist?

Really I guess I can see why some people would be offended. But Catman, how do your personally find this picture racist?

I'm not saying you're wrong in your feelings, I'm just curious to hear your answer.

I had a roomate here in Seoul who was working for the Spanish government. He was well educated and upper class. He was showing me his photos from back home and he had one with people slanting their eyes as mentioned in the OP. I had no idea what they were doing until he explained it to me.
This type of thing would never fly amongst educated Americans. Just adds to the fallacy of Europe as morally superior.

Given the behaviour of their football fans and the crap they directed at Louis Hamilton, nothing surprises me.

Purposely slanting the eyes is demeaning to Asians. The only think they forgot to do was stick out their front teeth.

But don't most Asians have slanty eyes?

What if an Asian made their eyes look like big round circles. Would that be racist?

Calling someone a ni%%a, chin%, g00k, spic, ect.....that's racist.

Slanting your eyes is stupid. But not racist unless the attempt was meant to be disparaging.

Of course it was disparaging. Doing the "slanty eyes" is clearly aimed at demeaning Asians. They may have been having fun with it but it is still racist.

And there in lies the key.

So Endo, is it the intent that is important when it comes to racism, or does the perception of the observer matter?

The above link you posted (like the Spanish basketball team) are both stupid and based on ignorance.

And perhaps both offered a glimps into a mindset of racial superioroty.

However, I wouldn't call either racist. Just dumb and foolish. (and a little bit funny.....I mean my foreign friends an I often make racial jokes towards one another)

It's all about context.

Considering that an American was brutally murdered in front of his wife who was also stabbed repeatedly, by a racist Chinese guy last week; I doubt that the Chinese are going to make a big deal out of this.

Dont laugh, I've seen kids in Korea push their eyes in, similating the round look!

I didnt take it to be overtly racist. it was only some seven year old boys.

I assumed it was just their deeply hidden desire for Caucasoid racial features. Wink

There has been a lot of talk about Spain being a backwards country..in terms of racism, I guess that just shows more of it.
