Does anybody know anything about data recovery on an external hard drive? Here are the details:

--500 Gig capacity
--about 400 Gig on there
--All pics, movies/tv shows, papers, music
--Western Digital drive with a Nudian case

I can give more information if necessary.

The problem is that when I plug it into the computer a window immediatly pops up and asks if I want to format the drive. I click 'no' and tried turing it off and on, unplug, different plugs. I don't know what else to try. I always click the unplug safely feature near the clock.

Let me know if you can help me out. Thanks

have you tried it at a different computer?

you might want to do that first just to make sure it's the external

then post here again as to what happens

This will work.

You may want to do a bit of reading first on the main page.

Hi Moosehead,
I brought it to a computer shop near my house and the guy plugged my HD into a desktop he had in the shop. Same format message came up. The only English he could communicate to me was "broken" and he told me he could not fix it himself.

ok, so now you know something's corrupt in the drive -

do you know how to get into dos from your machine?

if so, you need to try and see if you can at least read the drive's contents; copy it onto another drive (your hard drive) or something like that.

I'm even wondering if you have a virus rather than a hardware issue

is it an endless loop ? that is, you can't get it to stop ? or can you get it to stop if you choose "N" but then what happens?

also you can try starting your machine in safe mode and see if that at least calms the external down, again, so you can get into it from dos and copy the contents.

how old is the drive? did you drop it or do anything else that would have possibly damaged it? otherwise am thinking file corruption which could hamper retrieving files but not totally.

if it's malicious programming they are just hoping you re-format it and destroy your own data - which of course you aren't going to do or else you wouldn't have posted here - so try these other things and post again.

the only K techies I've ever trusted and found knew anything were the Samsung techies who worked on my Samsung machine - their service centers are all over K - you don't own a Samsung by any chance do you?

The links I provided will get all of your data back and repair the corruption on your drive, if it is possible at all.

Or keep stumbling around if you like.

if he's in an endless loop that needs to be halted first before he can apply any applications that will retrieve his data.

doing a process of elimination is NOT stumbling around - actually it's isolation and detection of the problem - it's the right way of diagnosing a problem -

it also takes an analytical mind, perseverence and patience - skills that are oftentimes lacking in many who profess to know more than others yet have little to show for it -

popping up a couple of weblinks w/o further details does little to calm the panic people feel when they fear they've lost data; it might behoove you to learn from someone who's had to walk many people thru various steps before in similar circumstances there is something to be said for taking time to deal with the problem at hand.

I'm not saying you're not trying to help but you are behaving in a brash and arrogant manner to say someone is "stumbling around"

and yes, it's arrogance to act as if you are too good to explain yourself further, and not take the time to do so.

He's not.

We know the problem.

The OP asked for advice, not a journey through the land of possibilities.

I offered a clear solution. Maybe I am odd, but that always calms me.

We know the problem, I offer a solution. There is no need for all the verbage going on in this thread. If the OP is a novice user, you are scaring / confusing the pants off them.

They have some corrupt files on the drive. Certainly they have some files damaged that Windows needs to recognize certain features of the drive. Does the OP need to know more right now? No. They need to get their data back.

Download the program I linked to. Install it. Run it. The program will ask or look for your detectable hard drives and ask which one you want to perform work on. Point it in the right direction and see what happens.

Spinrite is the best solution here, but it isn't free. I don't have any personal experience with the linked software, but it is certainly a popular program and seems simple enough. I linked to the home page of the program where anyone who truly wants to learn and cares about their data will spend 30 minutes browsing to LEARN.

Stumbling around wasn't meant to cut to any bone, but to illustrate that brevity is the quick fix and learning is best done after the OP has recovered all of their important data. I understand what you are getting at in saying that explanations, pondering, exploring and all that may lead to a deeper, better understanding, but in the same breath, you say that the OP needs "calming"...is that what your obtuse, needlessly wordy posts offered?

Well-meaning, certainly, but perhaps not in the best immediate interests of the OP.

WHO TF are YOU to determine there is too much "verbage" here?

furthermore, your so-called "solution" was nothing more than a weblink with no explanation - and probably he IS a novice - else he would have already tried my first explanation which was to try it on another computer first.

and WHO TF are YOU to say I was "scaring/confusing" the pants off him??

unless you of course, are easily spooked at the sight of your own shadow?? no doubt, which is why you write as you do - so much easier than adding a bit of compassion in your posts - scared of humanity huh?

wouldn't be the first online user who prefers the forums to people due to vast insecurities, low self esteem, and generally great insecurities regarding all things social - and from some of the posts on here I wouldn't want to know you either.

Nice that you stick to the posts and don't make it personal. Laughing

Now...who am I to blah, blah? Someone who actually knows as opposed to your notion of shared confusion. I'm sure the OP feels all warm and fuzzy by your hand-wringing, but how about a firm, clear solution?

I offered 2 links...one with the software, one with the explanation. It's all an adult needs. I don't treat the OP like a child; is that what you mean by "humanity"?
