I'm headed to Cambodia, just Angkor and Phnom Penh, but my doctor back in New York insists I should get Malarone.
I went to a Korean doctor today and he prescribed me with Lariam insisting it was the same thing.
After doing some research on what Lariam really is I am afraid to even look at the packaging. I called the doctor again and he says there is no Malarone in Korea, is this true? I'm about an hour or so from Itaewan (live in Jukjeon) and am willing to make the trip about anywhere for the superior solution. Any help would be much appreciated. |

| How long are you going for? I have some malarone left over from when I went out there as I cut my trip short. I have 36 tablets, if i remember right you are supposed to take them 2 days before you leave and 1 week after. PM if you are interested. |

don`t think you`ll need malarone if you`re going to Angkor Wat and Phnomh Penh. You`ll only really need it if you`re going way out in the boonies so I`ve been told by a few doctors.
Suppose better be safe than sorry but malarone aint cheap. Lariam apparently has more side effects

I'm going for one week next Saturday, my American doctor insists we need it for Angkor. I'm with you on that this is BS, but I just rather take it.

If anyone is interested, you can actually get them at the Incheon International clinic at the airport. |

I'd be careful taking Lariam (actually I wouldn't take it at all) because it has been know to cause serious depression and/ or psychosis
The CDC states

However I've heard the CDC and goverment down play how many people suffer this side effect. My cousin who is a biochemist worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center doing research on the drug trying to identify why "the drug sometimes causes severe side effects, including tremors, hallucinations, disturbed sleep patterns and even suicidal tendencies" but then the goverment cut funding for the program.
I know a girl who took it while working in Africa and reacted negatively to it; she had no history of mental illness and there was no history of mental illness in her family. I'd take another drug, I don't want to risk going crazy especially in a foreign country |

| Yeah, I'd only take Malarone if I was camping in out in the country for long periods of time. I spent a couple months in Cambodia and most people who started on Malorone quickly got off of it. After a week or two many people can't sleep and have nightmares. Try doxycyclen, it's a general antibiotic and anti-malarial -sp. It's probably not as effective if you drink and if you get drunk it might make you sick but it's not bad besides that. Ask your doctor. Either way most people I traveled with didn't take anything. |

Any lotion with a high DEET content will also work very well as a preventative.

You must be thinking of Larium. Malarone has relatively few side effects. |
