I live in Byeongjeom and the only problem I had was an older gruff Korean man took my almost empty Pepsi and finished in front of me. I personally find the are to be very nice, but I live about half a mile up the hill from the station and have met every restaurant and store owner all around me as well as most of my neighbors.
Living in Hwaseong, I'd say it's a great area. The further away from the subway line you get, the more difficult and frustrating it is trying to get out of the area and see things, so with that in mind I'd try and stay in the Suwon/Osan/Pyeongtek corridor that line 1 runs down, and not get into the main part of Hwaseong-si. I ride my motorcycle in the main section, and boy oh boy, it is pretty rural in between the population on the coast and the Suwon/Osan area...
Like everyone else says, just keep your eyes and ears open and you'll be fine. |

Thank you everyone for your detailed suggestions and very useful general advice!
Unfortunately, as has happened 11 or 12 times now, the recruiter regrets to inform us that the public high school position that is definitely available has suddenly become unavailable. I must be doing something wrong during the application procedure or interview stage, and would certainly appreciate advice on this as well.
I am still looking aggressively for High School jobs in Gyeonggi-do starting September 1, and of course it would be great if someone here knows of any openings.
In answer to [icicle]'s question: we're trying to avoid GEPIK due in part to the many negative experiences posted on Dave's by current and former GEPIK teachers, and in part because dealing directly with a school has its advantages. It will be nice to know exactly which school we are teaching at, what it looks like, who taught there before us and how they liked it, what the apartment is like, etc. I'm not sure all of this information can be provided in advance of signing the provincial GEPIK contract, but please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks again, everyone! |

Just to clarify: do you mean that GEPIK might allow me to speak directly with a given school in a given city about their working conditions before I sign the GEPIK application/contract?
That would be great, if they'd allow it! |

This really should be discussed on job discussion forum, but why not? Ask and ye shall receive.
In other words, try it. You have nothing to lose. |
