I have a Nikon D100 with a 28-70 mm lens. 2 batteries but no charger. What are you looking to spend? |

New in the range of about 500 bucks. Used, if you can find one, 300-350. The D40 is an excellent starter camera. |

I think you can get cheaper if you buy a Japanese import. I am not sure how much cheaper because the whole point is someone imports them in a manner that avoids taxes and tariffs. An expensive camera you can save hundreds on, for example my friend saved 600US on the newest Nikon. |

A "NEW" gray market D40 kit (body, battery and 18-55mm lens) + UV filter, 2 gig memory chip, extra battery, charger, carry bag and tripod will run about 400k at Yongsan or Namdaemun.
A non-gray-market D40 kit (not including the extras) will run about 420-450 (depending on your negotiating skills).

i'd be surprised if you can get it that cheap ... if you can, great!
the lowest price i can find is 429,000. gray market, Nikon D40 + AF-S DX 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 G II.
that's very reasonable for a dslr entry level camera.
you might want to also consider getting the D40x body with the same lens. the D40x has some extra megapixels and performance. it's a little more ... but would be worth it.
if you want information about buying cameras in korea, my camera buying guide is very useful:

That's what I paid for mine - nanjin arcade across the tracks from yongsan station. In the door, left aisle, about 8-9 stalls down on the left side. |
