I know a lot of people have Olympic fever at the moment. Hell, I took a cab yesterday and the driver was lamenting about how Park Tae-hwan contributed to Michael Phelps winning streak (his third gold medal). Just read the breaking news today that the man set a new world record for most gold medals for any Olympian in history. So, I have a serious question because it has been bothering me for quite some time now....
Is Michael Phelps more man or machine? |

He is part Dolphin. They did some genetic testing on him and found he has 25% Dolphin DNA. |

Not 15 minutes ago, my students were fishing for compliments for Pak/Korea, mentioning Pak's accomplishments...which are phenomenal...when I gently set the record straight.
I told them that Pak hopefully had the potential to be at Phelps' level of achievement someday, but they took it at as me blaspheming Pak. It was hilarious. Some of them were even doubting that Phelps existed...and they'd all watched replays many, many times. |

Actually I'd imagine that humans share 80%+ of our DNA with dolphins. |

I think if Park Taehwan bulked up so get some more power in his strokes, he would be one of the best swimmers in the world. I saw Phelps body compared to Taehwan, and Phelps had massive shoulders/arms comparatively. Taehwan is still very young.
I think it would be great if the 2 of them got to be good friends. |

I heard on CNN (or maybe BBC) that Phelps' suit is made from NASA designed material. Wonder what would happen if everyone had to swim in the same suit for each event? |

Yup, he contributed to his win...by coming in second place.
Phelps is an animal, and has quite possibly proven himself to be the greatest athlete the world has ever seen. |

Don't tell this to Rapier/Junior, Fiveeagles or Rteacher. They will have a fit!
Phelps, awesome athlete. Said it once, will say it again. |

It was actually offered to each and every olympic swimmer free of charge by Speedo. Speedo makes the laser suit that MP wears. Some took them up on it some did not. |

The suit is very superior. The vast majority of medals won have been by swimmers in that suit. Some swimmers even ditched their sponsors suits (Nike and Mizuno) in favor of the speedo. Its because of that suit the world records are getting smashed. |

Excuse my ignorance, but how can a laser be used in a suit? What does it do that makes the swimmer go faster? Do you know which teams accepted the suits? |

I've seen pictures of Park Taehwan wearing the LZR suit. I'm guessing he didn't feel comfortable in it, so he didn't use it in competition. |
