I got my release letter. Only one problem---my first name is spelled wrong. One of the letter is incorrect. Will this be a huge problem? My passport number/bday etc are all correct. The ct just left it on my desk..and he's no where to be found and I dont know when he'll be in next.

The name on your LOR should match the name on your ARC/passport.
It MAY matter and immigration can be anal about it but they may also ignore it if everything else matches.

I asked for both Korean & English and was told the English version is not available. Here's what my Korean LOR says...

고 용 계 약 만 료 획 인 서

my name here
my bday here
my passport number here
국 적 : 미 국 (no idea what this is)

school's name....red stamp
(school's address)

I don't know/read Korean so some of the characters look different to me. Is this...ok looking? Thanks!

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere...

If I get a letter of release and then find a new employer:

Do I have to do a visa run? Or can my new employer simply renew my E-2 visa while I remain in Korea?

In either case do I have to resubmit all my supporting documents all over again to get a new E2 visa: degree, transcripts, police check etc.

YES!!

Yes to everything. You may be able to extend it and not go on a run but you will need all the papers again. Hogwan to public school allows you to extend. I don't think hogwan to hogwan lets you and I don't think PS to hogwan lets you. Not 100% sure though. TTompatz saved my ass AS USUAL on this a year ago. I love him. It took me $90 and 10 days and they scribbled in magic marker on the back of my arc card and they stuck that in my untouched passport and mailed it back to me with the old visa still in it and no new one. Oh and I think there was a stamp in the passport saying I paid $90....gotta double check that.

You need all your documents again but you don't need to do a visa run. Just go to immigration and fill out the necessary paperwork. It's 30 to extend your arc, 90 to change place of employment, and 50 for multiple entry (well, I dont know what country you're from so it might be free for you).

My recruiter is contradicting this. He says that a letter of release is only effective if you've been working for your employer for at least nine months (I've only been working at my current hagwon for five months). He also says I must do a visa run.

Where did this "nine months" figure come from? It's news to me. When I phoned Immigration the unhelpful telephonist admitted he didn't know whether a visa run would be necessary or not.

Who to believe? Rolling Eyes

This is correct. If you have not completed 3/4 of your contract, then you cannot transfer your visa to a new company. You will have to do a visa run. You probably won't have to submit a criminal check again, as you did submit one after Dec 15, 2007. Mind you, no one on this board has really commented on whether they have had to submit a second one if they had submitted one already. Immigration stated that if you submitted one after Dec 15, 2007, then you wouldn't have to submit another.

I have heard though, if you are transferring to a public school, then they can pull strings to avoid the visa run. But don't quote me on that as a truth, as I don't know of anyone personally.

Well, I am looking to transfer to another hagwon, not a public school. Sounds like a visa run may be unavoidable.

The recruiter claims I *will* need to submit a second apostilled criminal check. (I hope he's wrong as it'll take over a month to order another one from back home.)

Do I also have to submit the sealed transcripts again? And do I actually need a letter of release if I'm resigning after only six months?

Might want to try pointing him to this:
Quote:
또한, 07. 12. 15. 이후 회화지도비자를 받은 외국인이 국내에 계속 체류하면서 회화지도비자를 재발급 받고자 할 경우에는 범죄경력증명서를 제출하지 않아도 된다.

Quote:
In addition, those with the E-2 visa issued after Dec 15 2007 no longer need to submit the criminal record certificate to reissue the same type of visa while staying in Korea.

The English version is here: http://www.immigration.go.kr/HP/IMM80/imm_09/1184186_37493.jsp

Unfortunately, it's not possible to link to the Korean version, but you can get to it from the Korean homepage by clicking 알림마당 -> 새소식 and going to post #349 (date: 2008/03/24).
