Although I've bought my ticket back to NZ for a possibly permanent return, there is always the chance of teaching in Korea again in the future so I'd like to ask a couple of questions.
If I use my UK passport again like I have for the last few years, will the Korean immigration service be OK with me still having my criminal record check done in NZ? I'm a kiwi and have spent only 3 years in the UK but 23 years in NZ, so I think the NZ CRC would be more appropriate.
Also, what's the latest on visa runs? If I came back to Korea early next year on a tourist visa to do some job hunting and face to face interviews, could I just do a visa run to Japan or would I still be obliged to go back to NZ for it? My understanding is that, after several years in Korea, plenty of previous E2 visas and no blemishes on my rcord here, I'm not required to do the Embassy interview etc. One of my co-workers insists that all teachers however, no matter how long they've been in Korea, have to go back to their home countries for E2 visas. That's bollocks isn't it? |

Your CBC has to come from the country of the passport you are using. What you're saying makes sense but this is Korea remember  . If you've lived and worked here before you should know this.

What you're saying is correct. If you've held an E-2 visa for 9 months or more before and have no blemishes on your record you can get an E-2 visa in a third country such as Japan. |

Your CBC has to come from the country of the passport you are using. What you're saying makes sense but this is Korea remember . If you've lived and worked here before you should know this.

Thanks for the reply. I had the feeling that may be the case. Well, I guess if I work in Korea again I'll just use my NZ passport. I just hope they will actually allow that, as I remember in the past - after being here on my NZ passport for one year then my UK passport for 18months - the immigration office requested that I just stick with using my British passport in the future. 
Why is the Korean immigration office such a bloody joke? Another thing I'm pretty sure of is that if I did come back for a 7th year of teaching I'd have to go back to square one again with all the bloody paperwork.
"Yes Mr. E2 Applicant, I know you've shown us your original degree 4 times already, but please bring it to the Embassy one more time".
It's bloody farcical. |

OK, one more question. My co-worker still thinks that if I come back on a tourist visa that I'll still have to go back to NZ to arrange an entirely new E2 visa, rather than just skipping over to Japan for the day. I still think this is wrong, and undertand that as long as the Korean Immigration Service has a computer record of my prior E2 visas, and that I can show them the old E2 visas in my passport, I shouldn't have to go back to the Korean Embassy in New Zealand for an interview (which I would do entirely in Korean and very sullenly - telling the Embassy bureaucrats what bloody stupid procedures they have). |

This is wrong. I worked for a year in 2006 on an E2 left for a year and am now working on an E2(got my visa a month ago). I had to go to japan for a night (although the korean embassy said that if I had dropped my passport off in the morning I could have flown back that day). No interview, got the job in korea.
When getting your CRC allow plenty of time mine took a month (they mailed it to the wrong address twice  )
The lady that deals with thye Apostille (sp?) is really nice, here is the link for NZ http://www.dia.govt.nz/apostille

the pdf is half way down "Priv/F1 - Request by Individual" make sure that is sent to the Apostille place direct. There should be no charge for the CRC but $40 for the Apostille |

Excellent information. Thanks a lot  .
I'm really thinking of just changing my one way flight to NZ to a return trip to Indonesia then spending three months here on a tourist visa, sorting out my CRC and a new kiwi passport and job hunting.
I want to go back to NZ maybe a year from now, but I'm increasingly feeling that if I leave now I will just regret it.
