There are even more examples of this in Korean. Especially when texting, emailing, foruming and chatting online they make so many intended shortcuts, shortened words, dropped particles and other oddities that sometimes I don't even know what I'm reading - then a while later I figure it out. I hate that kind of writing style in English too, but it's a nightmare in Korean when you aren't familiar with everything. King Sejong must be turning in his grave!

Korean forums are the worst - so much slang, word shortenings and neologisms. I end up using trendy new Korean words with my students that even they don't understand. "자출", for example, is the shortened version of 자전거 (bike) 출퇴근 (commuting). It seems like only bike commuters themselves know this term Smile .

I'm fully aware of the difference between their and they're, but when I'm in hurry I often get them mixed up.

"would of", "should of", "could of"... I am adding this because it seems to be a genuine mistake (which is not the case with "woulda, coulda, shoulda").

How about these two?

  • Myself and Jane are going to see a movie tonight.
  • Her and her friend are going to see a movie tonight.

The one that gets me (& I see it often) is when people write "weary" but meant to say "wary."

I think it gets drilled into kids' heads from such a young age that using 'me' is incorrect ("Me and John go to the park") that people are afraid to ever put it in. So they just use myself.

So you end up with stuff like
"...well, just between you and I..."
or
"...well, just between you and myself..."

As long as we're complaining about grammar points and not just spelling, I have a few more:

When people misuse "beg the question." It is not synonymous with "prompts the line of inquiry."

It's true; not many people know that this is actually a logical fallacy.

"Your" is a possessive.

* Your desk is dirty.
* Your mother wears army boots.
* Your mink coat looks suspiciously like a cat skin.

You're = you are

* You're beginning to annoy me.
* You're the apple of my eye.
* You're a sheep molesting Antipodean (the difference being Aussies rape sheep whereas Kiwis seduce them)

There

* The car is over there, by the tree.
* There are too many pedantic nerds on this website.

"Their" is a possessive

* Koreans are very proud of their distinct 4 seasons
* They are disappointed with their President
* The children played with their kitten in the garden

They're = they are

* They're not impressed with her grammar.
* They're amused by her opinion about smoking.

and my personal favourites....

"Its" is a possessive

* The cat used its litter box.
* A robot must never harm its creator.

It's = it is

* It's very muggy today.
* It's amazing what some people will waste their time with on the internet.
* I like bokbunja. It's my favourite Korean alcohol.

Thanks. If I see someone abusing these very basic rules of the language, I generally assume they are ignorant. This shouldn't have to be pointed out, but thanks again for doing so.

The English sound system is clusterfeok, and none of us are quite the scholars we fancy ourselves to be. English spelling is a mess. Pipe it down.

If you don't know that the English spelling system is irrational then you are ignorant and should not be teaching the aforementioned language.
