Schweitzer says Barr is best gun candidate
By CHARLES S. JOHNSON Missoulian State Bureau

HELENA - While defending Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's record, Gov. Brian Schweitzer said Tuesday that Montana voters whose main issue is guns might consider voting for Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr instead of either Obama or Republican John McCain.

Schweitzer said he doesn't believe McCain can point to any edge over Obama with voters on the gun issue because the Republican senator sponsored a 2004 amendment to require criminal background checks on all firearms transactions at gun shows.

Still, Schweitzer, a Democrat endorsed by the NRA, conceded that neither Obama nor McCain are the favorites of the NRA.

If guns are your primary issue, you're probably not going to like either of these guys, Schweitzer said during an telephone news conference put on by the Obama campaign.

He said a third option for voters for whom guns is their primary issue is to vote for Barr, a former Georgia congressman, if you're absolutely not going to vote for McCain or Obama on guns.

The NRA has given Barr a grade of A-plus, while handing McCain a C and giving Obama an F for their votes on gun-related issues in Congress over the years.

Schweitzer, who said he enjoys going to gun shows, said McCain's amendment could have shut down them down in Montana and elsewhere.

As for Obama, Schweitzer said, He ain't going to take your gun away. He ain't ever going to take your gun away.

From LP News:

"Oops.

Though a Democrat, Schweitzer keeps a gun hanging on his office wall in symbolic rebuke of the state's ban on firearms in public buildings. The state also found itself in the public spotlight a few months ago when several state politicians, including the Secretary of State, publicly stated they would push Montana to secede from the Union should the Heller case come back against an individual's right to keep and bear arms.

Without a doubt, Montana knows a gun-grabber when they see one.

So, for voters that vote mainly on the Second Amendment, consider Schweitzer's comments an endorsement of Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr."

It's not an endorsement, Schweitzer is simply saying if you are a one issue voter (that issue being guns) then neither Obama or McCain will satisify your requirement for voting for them. I would think there aren't enough voters (even in Montana) that are one issue voters that would change the outcome of the election.

Given the fact that Obama has said he supports gun owners rights, I think he'll do quite better then Kerry did four years ago. In fact, I'd go as far as to say Obama will win a few of the solid Republican states. Watch Georgia, which is Barr's homestate. He may even help Obama.

Utah's Carl Wimmer (R) is pushing for the same in his state!
He's even MORE in-your-face about it! He mentioned "safe-haven" states.
And another! TEXAS!

This looks to be shaping up into a beautiful trend, my friends.
We the Sheeple are finally awakening and standing up for States' Rights and Individual Liberty!

Sorry for the topic. Just the only one I found with "Montana" and "gun."
