Going over to work for SMOE, not sure if I should bring my suit jacket. Are there occasions where we would have to dress up more so than what we wear to work? How expensive are suits over there if I don't bring one and end up needing it? |

Sorry not to hijack, but I have a decent suit and I lost a little bit of weight. I am going to Korea and Thailand. Should I bring it with me to get tailored or should I just get a new one in Korea or Thailand? I wanted to have the pants taken in. They jacket is slightly loose but not too bad. How are tailors in Seoul? |

There are little old women who'll adjust stuff all over the place in Seoul (or anywhere else in Korea) for like $5 or something. If you go to an expensive tailor they might charge $50 then they'll send it to a little old woman and pay her $5 to adjust it (except for a couple of outlets who genuinely tailor..).
Anyway you can get it adjusted here. Prices may vary =)
Oh and I just re-read your original post. You should probably get some suits made up in Thailand, it's cheap as chips (like 3 for $250 or more.. or less.. depending..). You'll get a few shirts thrown in too. |

Itaewon has places of varying prices and quality...
here`s a link

Thailand would probably be dirt cheap as the above poster mentioned. |

i'd bring at least one over and buy others (if you think you need them) later. you'll want to look professional when you first meet your principal, vp, and co-workers of your new school |

Koreans are big on ceremonies...opening ceremonies, graduation...you may get invited to weddings, etc.
It's a good idea to have a suit on hand. |

Indeed. Work new years/christmas parties. Sometimes there's a "meet the parents" type events when you need to wear your sunday best. Yeah bring a suit if you have a nice one. If not, buy a tailored one there. Actually you'll probably lose a lot of weight the first few months you're there so might be good to get one after you've shed about 10 lbs. |

Also keep this in mind...I brought a couple of suits with me but left nothing back in my home country...I went back for a visit this past June and there was a funeral that I needed to attend...I had no suit and was scrambling to pull something together that wasn't cargo shorts, flip flops and an old t-shirt |

We must run in different circles. The Korean weddings I went to were madhouses with people wearing shorts and t-shirts, and this includes people that were actually IN the wedding. |

I've attended about half a dozen Korean weddings (in Seoul) and they have always been suit 'n' tie events. My school was casual dress and some Koreans still came in a suit and tie. Koreans are formal dressers, even when they don't have to be. |
