It's tough for me to choose who to root for:
Dad's family: English and French
Mum's family: Ukrainian and Romanian
Not a lot of soccer power on mum's side, so as long as the above are not playing each other, there's no real dilemma. I'd probably root for dad's side over mum's (other than language, I have no real connection to mum's culture).
England vs. France? My hometown had a large French population (the other part being Italian and Polish), so I'd probably cheer for France if made to choose.
But when it comes down to it all, I'd cheer for Germany... my uni town was 90% German and has the second largest Oktoberfest in the world... mmm, German beer. And these days, my step mum and her family are also old-school German, and would likely lynch me if I cheered for anyone else.
In 2002, I cheered for Korea when they played EXCEPT when it came down to Korea/Germany in the semis. My friends didn't like it, but they understood. |

Then why not renounce your American citizenship, move back to Korea permanently, do your miltary service and fully become "what you are" and all that entails? |
why would I want to leave the US permanently? I love the US. Just because I would root for the Korean Team, I should leave the States?

Did I touch a nerve there Mr Kyopo? No one cares what team you root for, but when you consider the nation of your citizenship "just the place I was born" you do that nation a great disservice.
Of course you love America. Its kept you out of the Korean military and given you a secure financial existence. But if you consider yourself truly Korean, why half ass it. Embrace your Koreaness and come back. I will even show you where the militray recruitment office is. |

Really? Your post tells a different story.
I love how some of you in your anti-gyopo hatred like to say, "You'll never be Korean enough" when talking about the status of gyopos in Korea. Then on the other hand, when a gyopo says he'd root for the Korean team, you tell him to "embrace his Koreaness." Koreaness. Nice.
So which is it? Make up your minds already. |

most kyopos have an identity problem, so they all root for korea becuase thats where they think they belong.. ( even the ones who dont speak korean) I guess you dont have this problem you are proud to be American!

| I'm not a "real" gyopo but I was born in Korea and have lived in the US for my entire life (minus those 60 or so days in infancy), so I root for the USA. It depends, sometimes--if I'm in the mood to root for the underdog, I'll root for Korea or any other opposing team. Depends. But yeah...I'm American...and I usually root for America. |

Some Gyopos don't care about the Olympics much 'cause they're not into sports or whatever. I find, however, that they can complain about Korean, but if a foreigner says anything negative, like complaining about traffic or something, that they'll make a negative comment about Korea when the foreigner hasn't even mentioned Korea or Koreans. Then they might develop a negative opinion about the foreigner and be angry towards them. A person can tell this from the comments they make about how they knew so-and-so foreigner saying such-and-such about Korea and how that was bad.
So you have to be careful and tread lightly because on one hand they're American and on the other they're Korean. And they're homesick. Aw. |

That is the definition of a gyopo. Or do you mean "real" gyopo as a gyopo who identifies more with Korea than their adopted country? |
