Hey all,
I will soon be starting a position in Bucheon and I was wondering if anyone had the inside scoop on the city. What are the bars and nightlife like, are there gyms and shopping nearby, is it a clean, cool place to be, etc. |

Can't comment on the nightlife because I haven't been there in a few years but it has all the shopping one needs (minus costco), and plenty of work-out places.
Is it clean? Seemed about average for a Korean city. Has a few nice spots but it isn't Shangri-la. Also depends where in the city you are. Overall not a bad city, and easy to get to Seoul. |

Thanks for the info. What about parks and green areas? Distance to Seoul or other attractions? |

There are plenty of green areas. A favorite haunt is Bucheon Central Park, next to the City Hall. For 9 or 10 months of the year (I forget how many), road traffic is prohibited through Central Park from noon until midnight on Saturdays and Sundays.
It takes 37 minutes to go from Bucheon Station to Seoul Station. |

And if you take the Yongsan subway train, saves you a bit of time getting into Seoul (5-10 minutes). |

Bucheon is a nice place (for Korea). You can catch bus 9300 on the corner in front of Homeplus to Kangnam. It takes about 50-60 minutes. |

So I've been living in Bucheon for the past year, and visited some last here, too...
It's cool...as others have said, it's pretty close to Seoul. If you are wanting to go to Hongdae or Sinchon you can jump on the bus (1300, 1600, 1601) and get there depending on traffic as quick as 25 minutes and as long as an hour. Plenty of shopping, Homeplus, Savezone, Emart, Homever, LG and Hyundai Dept. Stores, plus the shopping at the different substations. A handful of movie theaters, in particular the CGV that I go to. Lots of restaurants and bars (Korean), and western restaurants like Outback, Bennigans, and TGI Fridays, but they are expensive. As far as western bars, you got Canada Buddy, Cafe Nicolia (not a bar, but a restaurant that has a good selection of drinks, and my new bar Rhythm & Booze...heheh...we just opened a couple of weeks ago.
Foreigners go to Bupyeong to hang out, too, which is really close. There are two large parks. There is a group of us that play basketball in the area as well. I have gone hiking close by (10 minute drive away), but it is not the most exciting hike. Close part of Bukhansan is only about hour and change from here...so that's cool, too. If you are into ultimate frisbee, we play in Seoul, takes about an hour with from my door to the fields.
There is also a bus terminal here which is very convenient.
OK that's a lot of typing, but hope it helps.

I just moved in yesterday! I've never played Ultimate, but I know a gal (Sharon) who played with a group in Seoul up until recently. I'd be interested in trying it out if newbies are welcome. Does anyone know if a co-ed or womens soccer team/league in the area? |

i would be up to do just about anything to meet people here in Bucheon. I work at a PS so my interaction with other English speakers is very limited. Ive been to Rhythm and Booze to, but on a weeknight so couldnt stay out late seemed pretty cool though. |

I checked that place out last night. It wasn't very busy as it was Sunday, but I'll definitely go back. The chicken quesadilla was pretty good (and I'm from the land of Tex-Mex so that is saying a lot). Does anyone know where Beer O'clock is? I hear that place is good too. |

Hey sonicmatt, I'm in the same boat as you here. Just moved to Bucheon last week, working for a public school. I've already developed a new way of speaking so my co-workers understand me ... need interaction with native English speakers |
