You would like to think this, but it just isn't true. Spelling mistakes have nothing to do with intelligence. |
I disagree because I said 'repeated' mistakes in a pattern. I think everyone has mental blocks about certain words, but basic grammar words continuously spelled wrong and that change the meaning of the sentence....it's just idiocy in the end. |

That wouldn't be 'bumpkin' would it, pumpkin? |
I assume the poster meant "bumpkin." I saw this one on another thread here somewhere, but I can't find it now.

You can disagree all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that spelling ability has nothing to do with intelligence.
You can blame someone for being lazy....not checking their writing...it has nothing to do with intelligence...that is simply a fact. |

(Sorry if pointing that out makes me a pedant. The irony was just too rich to pass up. ) |
Too bloody right you're a pendant. You couldn't be more pendantic if you were a gold encrusted opal hanging around the neck of a wealthy European socialite. |

I choose to disagree. And no, it is not a 'fact' as you assert. Your bias does not make a fact. Sorry to bring you bad news. People have used 'laziness' and 'busy' for years here, but that does not make it correct.
This topic has come up about a hundred times since I joined the forum. Everyone knows about 'your' and 'you're'. It isn't news. They learned about it in 3rd grade. Habitual mistakes means they failed to learn the lesson. That is the fact. It is also a fact that there are some fairly stupid people here in Korea 'teaching'. People are free to either minimize their mistakes in typing (fair enough) or place themselves in the stupid category. It's your choice. |

Haha.
And JongnoGuru: Have you been away so long from your homeland that you've finally forgotten how to recognise humour? He was obviously kidding in the post with the homo..-thing. I'd have expected a comment like that from a Yank or something.
I suggest you invest in an English butler for your house in the hills in Jongno to keep your wits about you. Much classier than a Filippino maid. Or spend more time at the bar in the British embassy or at 3 Alleys or Seoul Pub or something. |

I read that the exact same way the guru did. Kiwiduncan has never given any reason to believe he was anything more than a nice but humorless hippie before now. |

I agree completely. That is to say, I agree completely with the title of this thread. You are a pedantic pr*ck.
Your/you're. There/they're/their. Blah blah blah. Those who don't already know these distinctions don't care and never will; this thread won't reach them. Most of us do know, though. Many of us, for any of several reasons, when we are not working up a term paper or something for actual (as opposed to virtual) publication, mistype these words and others like them. Not all minds are as rectum-linear as others.
What could some of those reasons for these mistypes be?
The most obvious has already been mentioned, even though the pedants aren't buying - because they're certain the words are completely different words - that some homophonic words can slip by the censor of a mind that doesn't belong to a drooling idtiot. But it really is true. Some really incredibly intelligent people make these mistakes, sometimes. The fact that some pedants can't "buy this" speaks more to their own stunted imaginations and limited intellects than it does to the intelligence of people who make such mistakes.
I would add to this likely reason that many of us actually think in complete sentences, full-blown, like Athena bursting from the mind of Zeus, and it's left to our fingers to keep up, and even though we know how to type more than 25 words per minute, our fingers are left the arduous task of trailing behind our coruscating minds. Sometimes our bastard fingers fail us.
Which leads me to suppose that a person who never, ever, f*cking ever makes a homophonic mistake must be the kind of person who hunts and pecks for every last letter of every last word of every pathetic sentence s/he is able shit out onto a page. And to all of you I say, Bravo on your technical perfection. Your next task is to find something to say that is interesting enough for someone to care much about - your assignment will be difficult, so you should probably confine your aspirations to writing text books and technical manuals, very slowly. (I know, I know, I have read all of your crap in this thread and cared enough to respond, but I have no life. What the hell is your excuse?)
All of this makes me think of the kind of pr#ck you invite into your house, only to find him straightening your sofa pillows, making sure your coasters' edges are aligned perfectly with the edges of your coffee table, making sure your glass is in the exact center of your coaster. The kind of person so pedantic, so obsessed with idiotic detail that he fails to grasp the point of what you are telling him, which is that you have been sleeping with his wife. ("Oh my god, he just used the present perfect continuous, when it's clear the present continuous was called for! What a moron! I mean, he intends to continue sleeping with her, right? He's not finished sleeping with her, right? So why doesn't he go ahead and use the present continuous? 'I AM sleeping with your wife.' How hard is that? God, how could she f*ck such an idiot?")
Such people are very sad. Even sadder is that they don't know how sad they are. They would be much easier to pity if they did not insist on pulling our pants down in the middle of the class, pointing and laughing and enjoining the rest of the class to laugh at us for some truly minor infraction that has nothing to do with the substance of what we are trying to say.
Whatever. Have at it. The rest of us are going to carry on an actual conversation now.

It wouldn't matter if I had just downed a bottle of whiskey with a crackpipe chaser while watching ultra-porn, on acid.......... I still wouldn't confuse they're, their and there. |
That's because as you are typing each word, your mind is completely focused on that word, not speeding ahead to the next sentence, most likely because your mind is not capable of such a feat.

...the fact that many posters don't know the difference between miscues and errors of knowledge is just a little sad. |
Thank you.

As previously mentioned, it's some people's job to care enough to get it right, and to correct other's [sic] mistakes. |
In my experience, such people behave like children when their own mistakes are pointed out to them, or they ignore them, or they pretend to some gratitude they do not feel for having their mistakes made public, all the while minimizing their own mistakes while magnifying others'. It's pathetic, isn't it? It's not virtue, it's just a classic superiority/inferiority complex. Let me point out how sadly pathetic you are so I don't have to look at how really and truly pathetic I fear I really am.
The easiest game in the world is "Gotcha," but it's a zero sum game. The only socially acceptable scenario for correcting someone's improper use of English is if you have been asked to or are paid to do so. Outside of that, you're just a f*cking douche bag. |

I prefer the term "strident, humourless hippie" thank you.
And I must confess that my intentional confusion of homophonic and homophobic was a joke. |

What I know about miscues, errors of knowledge and the link between spelling and intelligence comes from research. I read the papers that have stated there is no link. I have looked into the teaching of reading/writing and error correction; I have looked into error analysis techniques like running records; and I have looked into research why language learners make mistakes. Not one study every linked spelling to intelligence.
How did you come to form your opinion? I doubt you read a study that linked intelligence to spelling. You just have an opinion and somehow that gives you the right to think what you want...even if it turns out you are wrong.
Albert Einstein couldn't spell. Apparently, he couldn't spell in two languages. He was dyslexic.
Some people have suggested that it is keyboarding skills might have an influence on those 'there/their' errors as we tend to now be able to type faster than we think. Others look at the fact that people often type what they 'hear' in their heard. This is how definately comes about as many people pronounce the word with a clear 'a' sound.
But it has nothing to do with intelligence.
Sorry to disappoint...but you can find many reasons on this board ignorant or stupid, but you can't attack their spelling. It is an easy target, I know, but doing so shows your own ignorance more so than your target's |
