This is simply not true.

If you have a Nokia N80 from another country. It will work here via roaming at roaming rates ($$$) from your home carrier, but you can't register and use it here as a regular phone. Also, all of the features of the N80 won't be available when roaming in another country.

Get your facts straight.

"The 3G network began in Korea a year ago, and now we have 7 million customers (4.2 million by KTF and 3.3 million by SKT) who moved to 3G from 2G. WE can expect 15 million in 2008."

and :

"USIM unlocking
We are currently using CDMA for the 2G mobile network and it means SIM cards are not available in Korea as in the past (unlike GSM). Now, 3G mobile phones require a USIM card and this gives us a chance to swap or exchange our mobile with ease by simple USIM insert. But our service providers have locked the USIM card to void those exchanges till today (Mar 2, 2008).

Why? Each service provider has its own unique services developed from the 2G network which brings in their profits. Based on this, they have locked or removed the Wi-Fi features on most of the mobiles. Now, the Korean Government is mandating them to unlock the USIM cards by end of March.

So customers with SKT and KTF who take WCDMA technology as their 3G standard will have a chance to swap or exchange their mobile with family and friends. However, this will be available with limited services. If SKT and KTF customers exchange their phones, their SMS will not operate correctly. SMS is a just a small issue among others. Those problems have to be fixed, otherwise unlocking the USIM is meaningless."

Can you you register and use a Nokia N80 with SKT or KTF?

NO. The swapping of USIM cards with other mobiles is only done with KOREAN PHONES.

Not surprisingly there are variations of the same phone.

The person didn't mention whether he was using roaming from his overseas carrier or not. My point is you CAN'T USE the N80 with regular Korean carriers.

Sorry for getting your hopes up... it appears DCJames is right. I tried again and while I do get a connection to SK Telecom first, it will kick me out (Network Error followed by a SIM registration failed message) after the first attempt at dialing. I didn't try that before because I changed the cards back after I couldn't set up text messaging Iwhich is why I wanted to change the phones in the first place).

In brief, he's right, I was wrong (overly optimistic).

N80 works with a foreign card and roaming enabled. I'll have my office chase down SKT and see if there are ways to enable a foreign phone to work with the Korean USIM.

It works with a Korean USIM card, which is what I posted. I assumed that was what you had. SMS text messaging apparently doesn't work though.

I have 2 cards at the moment: Korean USIM from SK Telecom and SIM from AIS (Thailand). AIS card has roaming enabled and works here but text messaging does not. The SKT card does connect me first but then disconnects with the error I mentioned earlier.

So this is my best bet? One from the Samsung SCH-W series?

I guess the 420 looks the best...
