Dynamic Korea? Don't Count on It, BOK Says

Korea is unlikely to become an advanced nation due to its outdated economic system, the Bank of Korea said Monday.

Korean corporations have narrowed the technology gap with advanced nations in the 1970s and 80s. Since the 90s, however, as productivity became sluggish, the technology level of Korea has been remaining at half that of the United States, 60 percent that of England, France, Hong Kong, and Singapore, and 66 percent that of Japan.

"Many developing nations have failed to enter the league of advanced nations because of deficiencies in their growth strategies," the report said. Korea is likely face the same problem as well, the report said. The reason why Korea is unable to narrow the gap with advanced countries is not because Korea does not invest enough money, but because of its inefficient productivity, the report said.

How do they quantify this into numbers? Is it related to how much funding is given to R&D? Or is it some point-based system where you get 10 points for running water, 5 points for fire, 25 points for smokeless ashtrays...

Korea will reach a brick wall soon, like japan, where they have developed as far as they can economically- they've built on every vacant land and reclaimed the entire coastline. They won't be able to go any further until they reunify with the North (thus opening a land route to facilitate economic ties with beijing). And of course they'll be totally the loser in a few years when China's growth accelerates....

I am not glad to hear grim news like this for Korea, but I am glad a Korean said it.

If someone else said it, Koreans would just scream and cry foul, saying it's not true and they are just jealous, or something.

The only reason it's so crowded in korea is because most koreans want to live in Seoul. You take a bus ride from Seoul to Busan sometime and see the land that is undeveloped. California and korea are about the same in land size and California is not as crowded. True, korea has more people and much of korea is mountain. But so are other countries throughout the world. If koreans wanted to develope the outer areas, they could. But won't. Much of seoul is also upon hard rock, or was. As for being an advanced nation..... koreans think they are. I suppose the majority of non koreans think korea is not advanced because of.... attitudes? Substandard housing? Living like sardines? Lack of manners? Bad drivers? Poor education? Corruption galore? Egotistic? The list is endless. When they can defend their own country and not rely on other countries to fight their battles, then they are really making progress. On another note, millions of koreans want the U.S. out. It's very simple. VOTE!

actually claifornia is about 4 times the size of korea (south korea: 98,000 sq km... california: 410,000 sq km), and california has about ten million less people as well. korea is closer to the state of indiana in size.

political correctness rears its head once again. I think when i was in Uni the correct term was undeveloped, developing and developed nation. I"m sure that this has been found to be unsuitable and offensive now and that new terminology is now used.

This reminds me of the radio program (on some korean radio station) i was listening to a few months back where a kyopo was claiming that korea is more advanced than korea (or in some cases). Thought the guy was talking BS to make the korean audience feel better or that he had never been outside of seoul or both.

I"m amazed korea has developed this far it may surprise people and develop more than they might suspect.

A couple of points here. If attacked, New Zealand could not defend it's self, our army consists of a couple of speed boats and a few bb guns, but most people would classify us as an advanced nation. I don't have stats and I'm not going to look it up, but there was a time in the 80's when we topped the world in standard of living measures. We've dropped off now, but you get the point, it's not all about your army.

Next, I've spoken about the attitude towards the US army with a lot of educated adults ( through the fact I teach a teacher training course to Korean high-school teachers ) and they feel that the vast majority of Koreans support the US, but that the minority is more vocal and more news worthy, so it's easy to get a skewed impression of what the attitude is here. It's always the youth that are swept away with romantic ideas like unity, and socialism. The folks who remember the war, and there are plenty of them, are very grateful to the US.
