So my husband and I woke up this morning to an unpleasant surprise, our apartment was robbed! They only took cash from our wallets and an envelope we'd been saving, but it was a significant amount. We are just thankful they didn't take any of our credit cards or electronics.

We reported it to the police and they took a report and came and looked around the apartment. They even shone an infrared light on the floor and took some photos. I know some people comment on here about how inefficient the Korean police are, but I at least felt better for having reported the crime.

How common do think robbery is here?

Give people the opportunity, and they'll find subtle ways to brag.

Good reason to own a dog. They really do make the best door bells.

And about those rich neighborhoods... that's prime pickings for outsiders. Thieves don't exactly go looking around poor places where there isn't anything worth stealing.

Sorry about what happened. At least you and your husband weren't physically attacked.
Whereabouts in Pohang? I used to live way out at Handong.

Unfortunately, many thieves like to steal locally for some idiotic reason. And yeah, they do seem to avoid rich neighborhoods.

I live in an Upper middle class neighborhood know for being "well-heeled" that conveniently sits next to a much poor crime infested one. Crime doesn't really seem to like to travel much....must be the gas prices...

Does your landlord have any children? It is also a good idea to have your locks changed.

I find it very interesting that the cops came in with infared and took photos. Apparently they took it pretty seriously because here in my town in US, the most they would do is lift a pen to write up a report... which ultimately all it would be is a file stashed away in a cabinet.

Hope you find the crooks. And sounds like the police are at least taking the proper steps

Haha. But seriously though. Try locking your doors, meet your neighbours and don't leave cash around.

Crime wave overwhelms Japan

Although by international standards Japanese crime levels are still relatively low, the massive 150% upsurge in the past 10 years has created a real sense of crisis. Such a huge increase in a relatively short time has overwhelmed the system, leaving both the victims and the police unable to cope.

between 1998 and 2002, robbery increased 104%, car theft 75%, and burglary 42%

a government survey released last month showed that 55.9% of people think Japan is "not safe", while only 39.1% believe it is
