| 150K. Hey, it's too risky. You've hidden the plate, so I can't check if it has any outstanding tickets. If I buy it, those tickets become MY tickets. |

It's true that that used to be a big problem with buying/selling cars. However, these days the people at the registration office check for that as you apply to change the name on the registration. If there's a problem, then it's easily enough cleared up right there as you do the paperwork. (No, there aren't any tickets on this car)
If anyone really wanted to know the license plate number, a quick pm would solve the problem....
150K? Thanks for your offer, but I'll wait a bit longer. I'm in no rush. |

So how are unpaid tickets cleared? They surely don't just give it the "aw, shucks" treatment at the registration office. Somebody has to cover those. I'd think that somebody would be the buyer.
Definitely interested if there are no tickets lurking. |

Most of the situations I know of (there may be other ways to do this) the buyer and the seller go together to the required office and they find if there are any fines or tickets against the car. The seller pays those and then they transfer the paperwork to the buyer. |

| What if the car has been abandoned by a whitey who is now ten thousand miles away and isn't returning? Can I transfer ownership to myself without the original owner being there? |

SOLD
My baby has found a new home with some people who will love her and care for her. Thanks to all who expressed interest and/or bumped the thread by posting
Ah! I forgot... In the spirit of honesty, we discovered in the process that there was indeed a parking ticket on the car from 2005 (oops - had no idea!). We were not allowed to finish the paperwork for transferring ownership without paying it. It looks like the days of purchasing a vehicle only to discover later about the leftover fines are over. Sorry about that awkward sentence. I played with it for a few minutes before deciding that it just wasn't that important to me. |
