A Bloomberg-Paul Ticket on the Ballot in Virginia?

August 19th, 2008

The Independent Green Party of Virginia (an affiliate of the Independent Party of America) has gathered 70,000 signatures for the ticket of Michael Bloomberg and Ron Paul for president and vice-president. This is 7 times the number needed to qualify.

Virginia does not require candidates to agree to be nominated and placed on the ballot. The state does give the opportunity for candidates to withdraw from the ballot.

Both a Bloomberg spokesman and his lawyer indicated he might not object to being placed on the ballot. Spokesman Stu Loeser said: He hasnt made any decisions and hasnt had a chance to speak with Campbell yet But this is a call for post-partisanship that Mayor Bloomberg hopes the major parties will hear. Bloomberg lawyer Amy Neuhardt indicated that he may not act to have his name removed. It is unclear if Ron Paul would act to have his name removed.

UPDATE: Ron Paul spokesman Jesse Benton says: Were not going to take any action to get his name off, Benton said, but at the same time were not encouraging it.

If the ticket remains on the Virginia ballot, some have speculated that the ticket could carry the state, possibly throwing the election into the House of Representatives

No doubt some of these 'some' were the same ones who speculated about a tsunami last winter. Rolling Eyes

As of Sept 4th, both Ron Paul and Mayor Bloomberg have requested that the Virginia Greens remove their names from the ballot in Virginia. The Greens may substitute Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party and his VP runningmate.

One Ron Paul thread should suffice. Really, stick a fork in him.

Actually, this thread and the one regarding Louisiana are state specific threads, more than about Ron Paul. Every state has its own election laws. Some are just horrendous. If Texas follows the law this year, there will be only one candidate on the ballot for President, and McCain and Obama don't even qualify as write-ins.
