No goal, though I don't know the rules.
The ball hadn't crossed the line.
Amazingly close, though. |

According to the video I saw, it hadn't crossed the line, but that's based on the shadows and I don't know where the lights are. If the lights are right above the goal, then it wasn't over. If they were slightly behind the line, it might have been in.
I don't know if it has to cross the line, or just be in the air like some sports. I also don't know if they allow video replays to make decisions. If they do, and they didn't use it, Korea's got a valid reason for protest. My wife was saying the announcers were saying the ref wouldn't do a replay because they were Korea and they didn't deserve it. If it were America, they would have given a replay.
I don't know. I'll wait til BBC does a report on the match and then I'll figure it out. |

Your wife is a true Korean through and through. Paranoid persecution complex.
The Koreans deserve to lose because the goal keeper on that last play did a very piss poor job. |

I can't comment on the goal but I gotta say that was a good game. It reminds me a lot of hockey. I think I'll watch more handball from now on. |

Doesn't seem like there's much need for goaltenders, considering they don't save anything. They ought to just stick shooter tutors in there. |

Looked like a goal to me... but I'm fuzzy on the rules. |

I assume the ball has to cross the line completely before time expires, just like in hockey. However, it's a judgement call by the referees.
In this case, the referees consulted with the guy in the blue jacket on the sideline. I assume he was the time-keeper. It seemed like he was saying that the ball had gone in before time expired.
With the benefit of slow-motion replay, we can see that they made the wrong decision. But considering how close the play was, it's understandable how they could get it wrong.
You'd think they would allow the refs to check instant replay for plays like this. Probably, because of this game, handball will adopt instant replay for close plays like this.
The Korean team has every right to be upset with the result, but anyone who has played sports has experienced a referee's mistake giving the game to the other team. It's frustrating but there's nothing you can do.
It's especially hard to swallow after Korea pulled three goals back in the final minute only to lose on a blown call by the refs. Brutal. The players must be gutted. |

I think you mis-read that. The part about getting screwed because they were Korean was the announcers of the match, not my wife. She agrees that they should have consulted the replay, but isn't the one bitching about unfair treatment because it's Korea. |

I'm not sure of the rules either, but it was a hell of a comeback. That said, they could've played better defense for the last 4 seconds.
Based on the replays I saw, the ball hadn't crossed the line when the timer hit 30:00. However, if it's like basketball, and what matters is when the ball was released, then it was a goal.
However, from the rules linked to above (section 9.1 Scoring):
Quote: |
A goal cannot be awarded if a referee or the timekeeper has
interrupted the game before the ball has completely crossed the
goal line. |
Though not clear, it seems to indicate that the goal shouldn't stand IF it hadn't crossed the line before time ran out. After a quick skim, that's all I can find. Anyone else?
On a side note, I found this interesting though...
Quote: |
NRK's own pictures show that Hammerseng's shot was a few millimeters over the goal line when time ran out. |

According to Handball Handbook, "Any action on the court after whistle signal is invalid." It comes down to the decision of the timekeeper and when he says the time ended. The Korean team is protesting the decision and will provide old handball rules from the Chosun era to provide proof the timekeeper was wrong. |

Actually I think the rule is that you have to start at the middle of the court once your opponent scores; just like in soccer. But the referee just let it go without blowing the whistle. If I'm right, it's a definite violation.
Having said that, people must understand that referees are human beings and they do make mistakes. You just have to shrug and let it go. But I'm sure that's not what's going to happen. |

Based on the video evidence I saw, he WAS wrong.
Not sure why the officials refused to look at a video replay. Not sure if it's against Olympic rules or not. If not, what harm would it have done?
Yes, referees are humans, and yes they make mistakes. However, when they have an avenue to rectify those mistakes, and refuse to take them...
Korea has lodged a complaint, but have already said they aren't optimistic about the outcome. No guarantee they would've won in extra time, but it would've been nice to see the match decided 'fairly'. |

What countries are the referees from? I am sure Nazizens are calling for retributive action as we speak. |
