I'm not a big fan of the saitek look, and individually lit keys would be best. All the ones that look decent seem really expensive though. So far the only decent looking ones I've found were

Razer lycosa - dead sexy, but laptop style keys (not a fan) and $80

Logitech G11 - looks alright, normal but "soft" keys (I kinda like the clicking ones) and still $60

Those both have special gaming macros and stuff which I might use but don't need. I'd rather have a normal black keyboard with backlit keys for $30. You'd think someone would make it, I'm sure there would be a high demand. Can't seem to find one though.

So I'm still looking for a sale on the G11, but in the mean time I've managed to put together the best $700 box the world has ever seen. (Ok probably not, but I'm quite happy with how things worked out and I'm pretty hard to please.)

Probably impossible for a new machine. A dual-core CPU is over 100 and so is the VGA. You might be able to go and get a built system in Yongsan, but it'd be super cheap and probably built from crap components.

Acttually you arre wrong.. I gott a dual Core for 39 bucks.. E1200, Gigabite mobo $50, 8600gts $28, 2 gigs of ram $49, Segate 250 $50, Antec Case and psu $79

I believe he meant a gaming system, in which case you'd want at least an e7200/8800GT which ARE over 100.

Also, the system you made is really cheap but still well over 200. That video card was the steal though.

A whole deal for 300-400,000 would be nice. A gaming system yes, but an older one. 2-3 year old components is fine. I've heard there are whole deals you can get (tower, monitor) for around this price range. I can't believe it's impossible to get a fairly good system (by 2006 standards for example) for this price.

I would hardly call that a gaming machine, unless the only gaming you do is games that are old or still fun at low-res and low-settings. Oh wait, you could probably play solitaire on that pretty well!

Well, that and your total is $295, and that's a little over the stated price of $200. Did you get those prices in America? Or here in Korea?

And Pete: 400,000 is a perfectly good budget for an "old" gaming machine. You could get a pretty good rig for that price.

Here's an outline for ya:

MB: ASUS P5K SE - 99,000
CPU: Intel P4 Conroe E2200 - 90,000
RAM: Samsung PC2-6400 2x1GB - 35,000
VGA: MSI HD 3650 - 70,000
HDD: Seagate 250GB (7200.10/16) - 47,000
ODD: Samsung DVD-Multi - 24,000
Case/PSU: Generic + 450w - 35,000

TOTAL: 400,000

This won't win any speed awards, but it'll play games that are a year or two old, maybe some newer ones at low res and mid-settings. If you could drop an extra 30,000, you could go up to the E7200 which would be a huge step up from the E2200.

Where do you get those prices? Yongsan? Or can I build/buy online through a place like Gmarket? Also need a cheap monitor (not a CRT) Smile

Those are the prices from danawa which are the lowest prices in Yongsan. You can expect to pay a little more than those prices if you want to buy all in one shop. Cheap monitors can be had for around 150,000 for an LCD or 50,000 for a CRT.

Sweet system, Justjohn. Pretty much what I would have chosen if going for the $700 price point. You can get a Corsair PSU for 40 bucks!!!??? I wish I could be buying in the States......

In saying that, I just got an HIS HD4870..........330,000 in rip-off Korea. But, it's a wonderful thing to play all the games at 1680x1050 with everything on high. Always over 30 FPS. Crysis is amazing. I didn't realize there was so much physics in Crysis. At high settings, everything you touch bounces around in an ultra-realistic fashion.

For a Harddrive I would recomend the Western Digital 640gb. It has a high density per platter (320gb).

Seagate Barracuda, Samsung Spinpoints, etc. are other good choices.

You can check comparisons here.

For cases I'm partial to lian-li. They're expensive though. Antec 182 is my second choice for a budget case.

I just picked up PC Builder magazine and these are the specs they recommend for a bang-for-buck gaming machine:

Case
Coolmaster Cosmos 1000 $200

Motherboard
NVIDIA nForce 780i $250

CPU
Intel Q9300 2.5GHz Quad $270

RAM

2GB Corsair PC85000 DDR2 $100

VIDEO CARD
NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX $300

Power Supply
Antec TruePower Quattro 850 Watt $200

CPU fan $65
Zalman 9700NT

Hard drive

Western digital 500GB SE16 SATA $90

Optical Drive
Lite-On 20X SATA DVD R/W $25

Total $1500

The power supply looks pretty pricey.

@ kprrok

I'd get a cheaper mobo and go for the e7200 processor. Just a few bucks more and you can overclock them like crazy.

@ eamo

Got a total steal on that psu. Normal states price is about twice that.

@ tfunk

Sorry, but they don't know what they're talking about. My hard drive, CPU, and video card are all faster, my RAM probably is too and I have twice as much of it... And I didn't even skimp on the other components. The one I put together is hands down the better gaming system and I did it for less than half the price.

If all the parts work then this build looks stupid awesome for the cash. I made a computer with a P4 630 a few years back... whole thing cost me a lot more!

[piggyback] How much better is the dual-core E8400 3GHz compared to the P4? Don't tell me it's twice as bloody fast!

Best bang-for-buck!!??? I don't think so. That looks like an OCer's system to me. Not a bang-for-buck system.

I reckon you could get the same performance for $500 less if you got a different case, motherboard, CPU and PSU.
