Also, if you are Christian, there is a WONDERFUL church in Ulsan. The minister is from New York. There are Koreans and foreigners who attend the English speaking service. If you have any trouble or need anything, Bill George will help you. If you get sick and don't have insurance, the church will help you by paying for part of your medical bills!

Anyway, I hope this information is of some help to you.
I will vouch for Bill. The international service at Ulsan Simin Church (Presbyterian, but they're very accepting of any Christian) has a very nice pastor who is very helpful to anyone looking for help.

Does anyone know anything about RBI Korea? I found a job posting of theirs and contacted them, they sent me multiple job openings that all look pretty good. I ran a search for them but couldn't come up with anything....does anyone have any experience with them that can provide any feedback?

I initially had good responses from RBI, but had one issue with my diploma being in hand, and was essentially dropped. If you are looking for young kids in Busan there is also

Overseas calls (Dial your international access # first)

I ended up talking to a bunch of recruiters, several who I found to be very business like, and seemed very caring and good at their jobs. Many were Junk. I ended up not going through a recruiter, but found a company and contacted them directly. I got the EXACT job I wanted. Take your time! SIFT. Here are a couple of others I had good experiences with.

Youngran

- SHe called the CHicago consulate, and answered everyone of my questions VERY promptly. I only did not go with EPIK because I took the other osition, but would recommend Youngran (She is located in the US)

Joyce was the most professional recruiter I worked with. I just didn't want to work around Seoul! Otherwise I would have loved to have worked with her!

Those 3 were awesome. Also if you want to work in Daegu, I know my new company maybe hiring!

Thanks so much! I've been doing google searches and forum searches but haven't been able to come up with much. When I e-mailed them initially I told them that I do not have my diploma in hand at the moment, I just graduated in May and my school in California hasn't sent out the physical diplomas yet, I should be getting it this week though. I scheduled a phone call with the recruiter from RBI for tomorrow so i'm interested in what he has to say.
Thanks for the other contacts too. I'm trying not to contact too many recruiters to prevent any confusion or receiving an overwhelming amount of e-mails or phone calls.
If anyone else has any other information about RBI, I would appreciate it.

Here is another vote for Joyce Kim at Korvia. She has been extremely helpful and patient.

She promptly answers any questions, even when she is on vacation.

His job is recruiting, he just does it for one big company, where he is on salary, rather than several scattered throughout Korea. Don't pretend he's somehow any different than other recruiters because he has a different job title and speaks better English. All the 2nd post's caveats remain.

That said, you could do much worse than a company-owned YBM ecc, I think. The franchise schools are a disaster, by all reports I've received.
Recruiters are not good or bad. Their ethics are only a problem if you are an idiot.
Jobs are good or bad. You need to spend some time learning what makes a good job a good job and how to tell what's a good job and what's a bad job.
Read about what to look for in contracts, and reread the 2nd post in this thread.

I worked with them briefly. One of the guys there never says goodbye on the phone with me. For some reason, that annoys me to no end. Never asked me any deeper questions about myself or wanting to work in Korea. I could have been a bum of the street and he would have gotten me in touch with schools. Plus he told me there were no public school openings left when another recruiter told me otherwise. He also rarely contacts me about job openings but when he does, he expects me on the phone with the school director within 24 hours and keeps calling and sending me emails out of the blue. He may have good jobs but his lack of interpersonal skills has turned me off from working with him.

I'm now working with Teach Away, Aclipse and Korea Connections. They seem professional and they do their interviewing from the U.S. so their English is excellent. You also get to have a real interview with them before they contact the schools which means you really have to think through your answers. I like that. Not to mention they're pretty upfront about things and don't try to sugarcoat anything.

Joyce Kim of KorVia did not obtain the job I wanted and placed me in one I did not authorize.

I had a GEPIK HS job supposedly lined up through her. I sent off my paperwork and then contacted her about a week and a half later to check up on things. Only then did she let me know that the HS principal had refused my visa application and supposedly held onto my documents for an entire week before returning them to her.

In the same email she "conveniently" offered a middle school job, saying it was the only possibility at that point for me to still get a visa through GEPIK. She asked me to get back in touch with her to confirm this was acceptable. Disgusted, I did not respond and decided to apply elsewhere. I wasn't even interested in asking for my documents back because time is so short with my airline ticket.

A few days later, she sent another email saying she had placed me with a middle school job and that the visa processing was underway. I politely responded that my plans had changed, I could no longer come to Korea, and would she please remove the documents from the process. She wrote back saying she had done so. After that, I blocked her email address.

Placing me somewhere without my explicit permission is 100% unacceptable. The fact that she did not get the results I wanted already ended the business relationship, but the unauthorized placement defies all standards of professionalism.

In my opinion, it is likely she had this arranged from the outset.

I have applied directly to an adult hagwon and so far everything is going well. Once I have the visa issuance number from my new likely employer, I'll feel better. I think this position will be more suitable because my teaching experience is with adults anyway. PS jobs only interested me due to the supposed security, but that is rather hard to obtain if they won't even hire me.

Just curious what their reasoning was for rejecting your VISA application if you don't mind sharing. I'm expecting to hear from SMOE soon regarding their decision and I don't know what to expect given the complexity of the application process.

Starla, my recruiter said she didn't know. The only thing she could/would say was the principal had simply called it off. This was an especially cruel blow as I had talked with my co-teacher on the phone before sending my stuff to them. According to my recruiter, the co-teacher liked me a lot, and everything was all systems go until the principal refused.

One guess: my lack of teaching experience with younger learners was the deciding factor.

Another: dislike of my photo, resume, or something else in my application. I'm not a certified teacher and lack an English or education degree.

Finally, my recruiter may well have pulled something in order to place me in a middle school job just so she could obtain her commission. Remember, she did place me even though I did not give her permission.

Utlimately, I'm glad to have backed out from this school and recruiter. I received a good lesson in cutthroat bait and switch tactics.

When I looked for a job I signed up with 12 recruiters. Half didn't respond to me. Some just kept sending me hagwon jobs eventhough I requested PS.

The one I rode out the whole journey with was ThinkOutside. They both a) got me a job with SMOE which I later turned down because of the time crunch and b) got me a job with EPIK for 6 months later. I worked with my recruiter from November until I left for Korea in August.

I'm pretty much like you...no degree in English or Education and no prior teaching experience or certification. I'd rather be told upfront that based on this criteria, a certain school probably won't hire me. One of my recruiters told me that recently and I was fine with it. I would never apply for a job in the U.S. if I knew I wasn't qualified enough yet these recruiters waste people's time trying to make something fit that doesn't fit. They always ask for my photo and resume right away so I thought they show them to the school I'm supposed to interview with right away as well so a disqualification based on those two factors would come before the interview and not after. I may be wrong though.

I also got a few scenarios where the school pulled out at the last minute. The explanations were almost always lame. In the U.S., if they don't want you they don't offer you a position in the first place but I see in Korea, people changing their minds last minute seems common and this includes teachers as well as school directors and principals. Otherwise, I would have been in Korea already. Though I'm kind of glad I've been made to wait since I was interviewing mostly with kiddie hagwons and have since changed my orientation. I refuse to take the risk and only am dealing with more reputable schools now. I recommend going through the recruiters I mentioned. They seem more genuine than previous ones I dealt with, at least for the time being.
