Amazing footage. However anyone who expects a plane to explode from a lightning strike can guess again. The plane as you can see, conducted it. Brilliant to see it in action though Cool

Safest place to be, I'd imagine, like a car? Most dangerous place to be, I recall reading, is under a tree. That's dreadful news of course, because taking shelter under a tree in a lightning storm is really comforting....

That girl in your avatar looks like my ex-girlfriend from behind.

I'd say a plane is safer than a car under all conditions. Ofcourse, everyone uses the argument that the chance of getting involved in a car crash is extremely high compared with a plane. However, a plane crash or accident would almost always result in ones death, whereas a car accident may just be a small smash up. And yes, a tree is a bad place to be under during a storm. Actually anywhere that is damp. It's only because it's the perfect breeding ground for a hot fuzzy electrical strike, but in reality the chances are very low.

When the lightning hits, the current spreads out like ripples in a pond. You want to be parallel to those ripples so as much of your body is at the same potential. Then no current can go through you. So if you must lie down under a tree, don't lie with one part of your body much closer to it than the other. Better to crouch. Make sure that the current can't cross your heart.

IIRC In terms of human hours spent doing an activity, Air travel is about 5 times safer than car travel. In terms of passenger miles, it's better. Of course Plane accidents make the news, leading to distorted impressions.

Planes are struck by lightning very often. On average each plane is struck by lightning more than once a year.

Definitely looks impressive, though.
