So basically, the Korean won has lost .340 won since July 7th? That's not so bad.

It's probably more of a combination, OP. US dollar has gone up in the past month or two. When you compare won to US dollar, that would show the won going down. However, against other currencies it hasn't been as bad.

huck,

You do know, don't you, that you can highlight a line or two of text, click the Quote button in the little box above the window where you write a response, paste the quoted text, click the quote button again....and then add your comments? There is no need to quote an enormously long post just to add one line of response.

For those that suck with computers I think you need to actually highlight the text and copy it (ctrl+c) after you highlight it then do what he said.

Isn't inflation hitting Korea alot harder than the US?

Or at least, more tangibly, and that is why the Korean government has switched in recent months from a "weak won" policy to a "strong won" policy. Problem is, even with potential billions in foreign reserve intervention, the Finance Ministry can't keep up with the general market pattern which favors won weakness / dollar strength for the time-being. Most of the forecasts I've read pin the won at between 1100-1150 (if not worse) for the latter part of this year - though, of course, these are just forecasts. Hopefully we'll see a turn in the tide come January, February...

Did anyone notice how the Korean economy tumbled after the US economy? The two appear connected, possibly via Japan. Japan withdrew other investments in Asia to cover losses in the US.

If the Won tumbles, it will be bad for us. Prices will rise while our salaries stay the same, so we will essentially make less money Sad .

Isn't the current USD/SKW exchange rate the worst in five years? At least that's what I've heard from an American friend. And Korea tries to keep the USD/SKW exchange rate somewhat even.

Well, there is an upside. I bought lots of CDN $'s this summer at about 1010.

If the won goes to 1150, I can sell and make a buck, or well over a million won...

Considering we had about a year where we were getting well over a dollar per thousand won, I'm gonna shrug and not worry too much about it. I'll start to worry once we get into the 1100 = 1 USD range, but until then, I'm not gonna give myself an ulcer over it.

When I came here 4.5 years ago, the exchange rate was over 1200 won= $1, for my entire first year. No, it's not the worst in 5 years. The only people freaking out are those who showed up in Korea within the last year and were enjoying a record low exchange rate (for the last decade)at their arrival.

Why, it's almost as if there some sort of global economy where nations exchange goods and services.

What?? Is that why people are commenting on it? I thought they just enjoyed long tables of figures.
