I know there is already a thread about this but I wanted to start a new one to say that the vulnerable sector search is now officially needed. I just got off the phone with immigration. Looks like us Canadians are now under different rules than the others.

I have 7 weeks until I need a new visa. The process so far is to get a copy of my I.D. signed here at immigration and send it to my father so he can get my crc at the local police office.

In terms of the vulnerable sector search it sounds like I will need to be in Canada to apply for that.

If this is true I am saying bye to Korea.

I would like to hear some stories of how somebody got their vulnerable sector search while in Korea. c

Uhm, I got it done without having to do much of anything.

Call your local police office and tell them you need a record's check. Tell them you'll fax over copies of your Visa, Passport (main page), Driver's Licence and SIN card (or as much of that as you can). Tell them your folks will swing by to pick it up and pay the fee.

Mention somewhere in there that you're working with children and... Voila! You'll have it here in a week or two. The "Vulnerable Sectors Check" is just a box they'll have checked on the form.

Crisis averted.

Crisis averted for now, that is. You'd better hurry up and get over here before they change the law again.

Now....What are they going to dream up next? Character references from your elementary school teachers? Perhaps a statement from the pediatrician who delivered you into the world that you were not a problem child at birth? Maybe a statement from the major chain pharmacies that you don't pop psychoactives? Where does this invasion end?

Learn how to bribe. That may come in handy pretty damn soon.

Oh geez, this is getting ridiculous. Knowing that I want to return to Korea in the new year, I thought I would be proactive NOW, and apply for my CRC and other documents, so I'll have them in hand for my new prospective employer. Do Canadians now need BOTH a CRC and a Vulnerable Sector Search? This is especially a piss-off, as I just heard a story from a friend last night who had his VSS processed in Canada a month ago and had a refused by Korean immigration. What's the best thing to do - apply for both?

Your CRC will expire before the new year if you get it now. You only have 3 months from the issue date before you need a new one!

It is good for 6 months from the date of issue .... not 3.

I went through the Winnipeg Police Service and received my national background check, including VSS in just over 3 weeks. I did it all from Korea and I have never lived in Winnipeg or Manitoba for that matter. No fingerprints were required and it only cost $30. You can download the necessary form from their website. You just need to send two acceptable pieces of I.D.
So far this seems like the easiest, and quickest way to get this done from Korea.

Quilter, that's amazing. You mention downloading the necessary form from a website ... which - the RCMP or the Winnipeg Police Service? and you acquired BOTH a CRC and VSS in one shot, without fingerprints? Have you submitted this to Korean immigration yet?

The form was downloaded from the Winnipeg Police Service web site. I actually didn't request the VSS because I was told it wasn't necessary if you were applying from within Korea, but they did it anyway. As stated by the Canadian embassy, immigration, and other posters who have submitted local police background checks, it is acceptable.
http://www.winnipeg.ca/police/BPR/info_request.stm#crim_record_search

The check was applied for through the regular post, and returned the same way. It isn't an online check or anything like that. It includes a National check, a local Winnipeg check, and a VSS. It was sent directly to my home address here in Korea, so the next step is to take it to the Canadian embassy to have a statutory declaration made and it stamped.

Hope that helps.

My school's idea - yet to be proven successful - is to go through CMB Paralegal www.cmbpara.ca and have them do the CRC and VSS then have the hardcopies sent to my parents in Vancouver who can go through the consulate there who supposibly still will approve second-party checks. According to CMB the check looks the same as a normal check as it is through CPIC (?sp?) and not like Truecheck.ca which sports their own logo.

Anyway, I like the Winnipeg idea, seems more legit and propably will prove to be more successful and speedy if in fact 3 weeks is a normal time-frame. My contract ends in October....

Oh this is soooo confusing!!

thanks for all your input and ideas everyone.

quilter, yet another one for you ... (thanks for the link, btw) you mentioned you have never lived in winnipeg or manitoba and it wasn't a problem. can i ask why you applied through their police service vs. your home province for your criminal and VSS checks? i've never lived anywhere near manitoba and worry about it going bunk up! also, have you submitted these checks to both the canadian consulate and korean immigration? all was well? (don't worry, if things don't go my way, i won't hold you responsible. we all know the instability of the system at the moment!)

If anyone who has renewed with the Incheon POA for September, what did you do? I didn't need a Criminal Check or a VSS when I renewed my ARC in early August, but I got one anyways while on holiday.

Nice going, Korean immigration.

Some Police station, like the Toronto PD, will not issue the VSS check to individuals. They will only issue them to companies that have applied for the service, such as the Board of Education, YMCA ext...

I had considered this idea of going through the Winnipeg police at the beginning when this whole conundrum started, but I found out that those already in Korea didn't need the VSS. It doesn't surprise me that they are going to change their policy.

Bradshaw,
I didn't obtain a CRC from my hometown/province because I haven't lived there in more than 14 years, and I have lived overseas for the past 10. It was possible for me to get a CRC from my hometown, but Winnipeg just seemed like the easiest. I haven't submitted these to the embassy or immigration yet as I just received them a couple of days ago, but the police report I received is no different than a Toronto, Calgary, or Vancouver police report. This is a local police CRC with a local, national, and VSS search. It has been deemed acceptable by immigration and the Canadian embassy.
