Hey all!
In 6 days I'll be headed to Glasgow for two weeks to stand in my friend's wedding. We'll be touring around Glasgow, Edinburgh, through Stirling to Inverness, and back along the coast to Glasgow. I'll also have a period of about 4 days or so in which I'm thinking of heading to either London or Dublin (haven't decided yet).
What I'd like to know from you knowledgeable sorts, is what there is to do there that I absolutely shouldn't miss. What food I absolutely have to try (or what drinks ), what things I absolutely have to buy, etc.
I'm pretty excited, as I've never been anywhere in the UK before. Her fiance says I'm going to fall in love with the chocolate there, which could be either a very good thing or a very bad thing lol.
Anyway, if you have any input, let me know! Thanks!

I lived in Eyemouth and around the Borders region for a while in 1997 whilst doing a potato harvest there. The area is lovely in the autumn and one of my fondest memories was lying on a haystack on a farm outside of Dunbar in the warm midday sun with a pair of golden retrievers and gazing out over the north sea. For drinks, I would definitely recommend Gilespie's Malt Stout, if you can find it. |

Things you should try in Scotland:
Irn Bru (drink)
Whisky (Lagavulin and Talisker)
Fish and chips
Deep fried mars bar
Haggis
Buckfast (wine)
Cool places to go in Glasgow:
Byres Road (the West end of Glasgow with lots of lovely bars)
Variety Bar (cool bar in the city centre)
Nice and Sleazies (another bar in the city centre)
King Tuts Wah Wah Hut (good place to watch some bands)
There are art galleries and stuff but you can get guides for all of that.
Avoid if possible going anywhere too far outside the centre of Glasgow.
If you get lost ask someone who looks respectable. Avoid youths with tracksuits and caps. If anyone mentions a "square go" run away.
And finally, of course, sleep with a Scotsman.
Hopefully someone else can help you with the other cities. |

You'll love the scenery on the way up to Inverness.
Haggis and black pudding are must tries along with fish 'n chips as Morton said.
Lots of sugary and fatty foods coming your way. I've just returned from a trip home and I had forgotten just how salty and sugary the diet at the parents home was!
You'll have a blast, watch out for the midges. |

I forgot to mention - I'm going for my friends wedding, and she is marrying a Glaswegian, so I'll have someone with me who really knows his way around things. I just know that sometimes people who are from an area have "their favourites" and might exclude some things I might miss out on.
I'm pretty excited about going.I've never been anywhere in the UK or Europe before.
He did mention the deep fried mars bars (heart attack in a snack much?), haggis suppers, fry ups, and Indian take out. I'm assuming we'll do a lot of pub food, as that's what he likes to eat, but I don't want to gain 20 lbs in one trip haha.
Thanks for the great tips so far! I'm pretty excited! |
