Anyone have this deducted from their July or August pay, and what's up with it? Is it mandatory; do we get it back someday like pension; is it something foreigners shouldn't pay?

It's not that much, but I'd rather not pay it if I don't have to. If I paid everything I don't have to pay I'd be broke.

No one knows about this?

I think it translates as "long-term care for the elderly tax".

Yeah, the amount is not much, but my EPIK contract clearly says income tax, pension and health insurance will be deducted, and nothing else is said. I suppose if it's a new government tax, there's nothing to be done, but I don't think it's fair to tax us for this. No English teacher is going to end up here old and poor, so there's no benefit to be had.

True, but us Brits, Aussies, Kiwis and SAs don't even get our pensions back. Imagine how we feel about that - $1200 or thereabouts down the toilet.

I got stung for it these last 2 months. I thought it was a reasonably small amount and didn't feel like embarking on another weeklong argument to get back $3.

As for the pension, they (your school) should be paying that into the appropriate government agancy in your home country. Will come in handy when you reach a certain age.

I checked on the British National Pension website and it costs about $600-$800 per year if you want to pay a missed year. Though I dare say some people will say a state pension will be useless in 20-30 years.

Heres a link to the pension guide.

Australians DO get it back now (starting July of this year and retroactive for those who were here before).

I feel the same way to an extent, but I'm just concerned about whether or not I'm required to pay it. I'm not sure if it's a legal deduction.

It's about 3,000 and you're worried about it? Good lord it must be nice to have all the time to worry about little shit like that. Look at it this way, that's less than one coffee per month. Deal with it.

By the way, it's a legal deduction if it's a law of the nation that they make it. Just because it's not in your contract, you have to do it if it's the law.

All I want to know is whether it's the law or not. Also, whether it is one that is legally applicable to foreigners. If it is, then I pay it, if it's not, I shouldn't.

Money is money, and I'd rather not pay what I'm not supposed to. My deduction is 5,000 per month, or about 60,000 per year. I don't feel like burning 60 bucks if it's all a matter of some guy in administration not understanding how to make deductions.

It got pushed back to October for some unknown reason according to the Korean pension office.

not only have they taken it outta may pay for the last two months, but i've also gotten an additional bill to pay it my post box for the last two months... my head teacher said that i should pay it, but when i showed it to the human resources guy, he just ripped it up and said that it was rubbish... hope this doesn't come back to bite me in the ass...

i definately don't think that we should be paying into a fund that will not be applicable to foreigners, and kinda think that it should be treated same as the pension. ie, when you leave the country and say you're not coming back, you should get the $ back. 60,000 won would pay for your leavin drinks, wouldn't it...

In other words just pay it so she doesn't need to go through the hassle of getting it off your pay deductions.

....

I can find nothing about why we should be paying this or whether we should be.

If it is law, then we pay it no problem. But, who knows if this is even applicable to foreign teachers, or just bad deduction practice by administration offices that don't fully understand the details of the regulation. Maybe it doesn't apply to foreign teachers. Maybe we get it back someday. Maybe a lot of things, but I can't get clear information.

Somebody wrote that Aussies and Brits piss away twelve hundred a year on pension. i hope you didn't mean that you are being deducted that from your paycheck each month. If you can't collect pension, then you don't have to contribute. Maybe I misunderstood your words.[/quote]
