well - for restaurants in K it's downright rad

nice deep purple and emerald colors, smoky jazz playing softly, good service and a new menu - OMG - excellent food, prices very reasonable.

I was going to have Pad Thai but opted instead for this soup that looked so good - and it was - tender-crisp veges - carrots, baby corn, shitake mushrooms, bak choi, an utterly delicious broth that was like velvet; tender piece of white meat chicken. Then I discovered it was also filled with big noodles as well. Very satisfying.

Thinking since I ordered soup I'd still be hungry so I also ordered spring rolls and they were so good - not greasy, fresh veges inside, one order was 6 rolls for 5,000 won - the soup was 10,000 but was so large I brought half of it home.

Then they brought me a desert for "service" - I didn't order it - a kind of frozen coconut milk with these little tiny green fruity balls on top - positively scrumptious!!

check them out - they are on the same side of the street as the fire station (in Itaewon for newbies) just keep on walking away from the center of Itaewon; upstairs on the 2nd floor across from the "Land of the Morning Calm" antique store. You can't miss all the purple outside the building. There's some kind of "Board Store" clothing place downstairs as well.

Why is it that everybody goes to a Thai restaurant to eat pad thai? That's ordinary street food, popular with tourists because that's the first thing you smell after you dropped your rucksack in your Khao San guest house. What else, a Thai place that makes great "Mama" noodles? A bit like going to an expensive French place and ordering french fries with ketchup and mayo.

The food you describe sounds delicious but I cannot remember having any soup in Thailand that had carrots and baby corn in it. Those I have seen but normally in fried dishes only.

Atmosphere you described sounds nice, so I'll check it out.

Pad Thai is popular because it's good silly!

I've had it in Thailand and I've had it in NYC - NYC's is definitely better - as in Thailand it did have a somewhat "ordinary" flavor to it.

perhaps because it's easy to prepare is why one always sees it on a Thai menu - what's wrong with that?

and as for the veges - Thailand has regional quisine like many countries - simply because you haven't had all their food doesn't mean it's not from there. I've never seen curry puffs outside of the Thai restaurants in NYC and not even all of them - maybe they are a specialty? I asked about them at the Thai Orchid but they didn't have them.

Anyway, all restaurants have the chef's own individualistic styles as well - if it's a good place - so I hope you do go and everyone else does too because this is a good restaurant and we need places like this in Seoul.

will definitely try because it has been a good 6 months since I last had the original. I might even go for pad thai, perhaps as takeout for a late night snack

I can't deny I love the stuff, same as the many variations of ba mee and even yum mama, probably could eat it everyday... it is just so... ordinary

Was there last weekend.

It's good, but it bothers me when they give Korean rice. I'm not a big rice fan, but for the sake of authenticity, how about Thai rice?
