Well that'ts not entirely accurate.
You are not supposed tp engage personell with a .50 cal machine gun as in the Browning 50 cal that has been used since WW2. I used the Barret 50cal sniper rifle when I was in the Army, and that is legal all day long.

Yeah, you're right. I oversimplified it.

I learned when I went through basic that .50 machine gun rounds were banned by the Geneva Convention from being used against ground troops. That doesn't mean they can't be used against vehicles, or from sniper rifles.

Quote:
If you want to get into ROE then you are really only supposed to engage the enemy with the least ammount of force necessary. If one guy is shooting at you, you are not supposed to fire a TOW missle at him. Does it happen? What do you think? It was my opinion that you get rid of the threat as fast as possible. I might be out of rifle ammo and all I have at my disposal is a 50cal machine gun. So long Achmed.

I know in Iraq they'll level a city block for one sniper if they can't see where he is. High US Soldier death tolls = no popular support for the war.

Half the Canadian ROEs... even in war time situations, only allow you to shoot back if you are fired upon or if a friendly soldier is actually hit. Also, lethal rounds are not permitted except for in extreme situations, hence the C-7 only fires 5.56mm (mostly non-lethal) while the AK fires 7.62mm
(very lethal).

I don't quite get this. The standard issued rifle in the Canadian army is the C-7. Are you saying the canadian army purposely equips its soldiers with C-7 rifles with 5.56mm rounds (usually non-lethal-your words) because anything more extreme is not permitted? If you are going into battle are you not already by defintion in an extreme situation?

Does the average Canadian rifleman have to ask permission to kill his enemy or do they just walk around trying to draw fire and then call over the buddy who is carrying the C6 or the Browning .50 cal?

I was always under the impression that the smaller rounds of ammunition were chosen because of a need to balance range and precision.

No, you're not supposed to kill anybody. The ROEs are usually so strict that it would have to be an extreme situation before you were allowed to "fire at will". I knew some guys who got shot at quite a bit in Bosnia and they were not allowed to return fire, so they spent a day underneath their truck sobbing while 12 year olds on top of a hill fired AK-47s at them.

The CF is not a combat force so much as it is a supporting force. Even the infantry.

Their goal is to make people non-combatants by injuring them. They will also reprimand you for not picking up your litter on the battlefeild (empty magazines, casings etc) unless you're in an extreme situation. These facts are from basic training and personal accounts of people I knew who served, so I might be a tad off or things might've changed since Afghanistan picked up.

It's just the way the CF rolls, I guess.

So is that what happened to those CF snipers that the army so disgustingly treated when they got back from Afghanistan?

Good job boys, but your bullets were too big. Shouldnta killed all them
Talibs, shoulda just wounded em. Rolly eyes or winky eye, not sure which one is suitable.

Remember when everyone was so upset because they thought this was real?

http://www.shorty.com/bonsaikitten/

Turns out it wasn't, of course Laughing I guess the police even conducted raids looking for the webmaster of this website before they found out it was a hoax.

I agree. The thing that gets me is the war images; I think about how I might have a few nightmares, then I think about the kids who are actually experiencing these images every day is some places.

I got really into Japanese war crime history when I moved here in 2006, and ended up reading some books on the Rape of Nanking and Unit 731. The descriptions made me almost pass out.

Yes, the Rape of Nanking was made into a documentary. Don't know if you've seen it. I have, but haven't read the book. After having visited Japan, I found it hard to imagine those same people behaving like that... then again, neither could anyone visiting Germany or England.

One of the most disturbing images I've seen in the past few years (it made it difficult to sleep for a few days) was a picture from the Bhopal (Dow Chemical) Nuclear power plant incident in India.

Yeah, "Nanking," with Woody Harrelson et al, speaking in the roles of the white people there who helped when the Jap devils came and did their horrors. Watched about an hour of it, and said, well, yeah that's enough of that. My friend bought the DVD in Nanjing.

Sort of the same thing when I read some of the book by Iris Chang, and also John Rabe's diary, "The Good German of Nanjing." Did not have the fortitude(?) to finish either one. The pictures were rough to look at. Haven't been to the Massacre Museum here either. Not sure I'm curious enough. I think there is a letter from Hitler there.

Human bodies are too vulnerable. Be careful. Don't do stupid things. I hope every one of you will die at least in one clean piece some day.

It's all very sad.
Like most of you guys, images like those written about stay in my head, too. Prefer not to see them.

I'd really hate it for someone to film my most private event, dying, so everyone can look at me doing it. Like if a car hits me or something.

However, those ones where the Taliban etc execute women for not wearing their scarves and stuff like that then the World should know about that so they can take those people out.

As for those SS guys you met in Germany, you should attach a vacuum jar of powdered gelacnite onto their intake manifolds. When they get to 2500 rpms in overdrive, boom.
