| Oh well, it turns out I can't do 100 push-ups. (I just did 60). However, I haven't been exercising much for the past 5 months or so. You wouldn't think it would be much of a problem for someone who was actually in shape. |

| I'd say a good 95% of the population are not in shape. 60 push ups rule btw..thats fantastic especially if you are not training. |

| If you want to do another bodyweight exercise dips are said to be even better than push-ups. Both are good. |

There's also the distinct possibility that he considers going down 4 inches and coming back up a "pushup." But yah, 60 is very good for not having trained recently. |

| I max out at around 80 plus or minus. Move to wide arm and get two or three more. Then muscle failure. The only way to really get good at push-ups is to do them. I've seen guys who can bench a hell of a lot but can't really knock out alot of push-ups. I'm no gym rat so don't listen to me, I just had to do them when I was in the Army so I still do them now. It helps with my climbing. |

Arriving here 2 months ago I was fresh out out of a kayak season and pretty fit. The fairly hardcore training involved 2 hours on the water a day. As well I cycled 60 km a day.
The above I did roughly 5-6 days a week. I skipped gymwork that hardcore paddlers mostly include.
In Korea this hedonistic life abruptly ended and I had to make do with cycling, pushups, pullups and situps. Pretty boring for me, but better than nothing.
At first I could hardly do more than 4 pullups, about 50 pushups and 30 situps. Two months down the line 5 reps of 10 pullups, 5 reps of 70 pushups and 16 reps of 25 situps.
My point is: I'm now not nearly as fit as 2 months ago. I'm now out of shape, but my ever increasing numbers suggest otherwise by the logic of this thread. These kinds of exercises are simply specific and don't mean much overall.
That you can't do many pushups does not necessarily mean that you aren't in shape and vice versa as well. |

| I have never tried to do a hundred consecutively, but I don't think I could anyways. I am a powerlifter/bodybuilder/fighter and have been for the last twenty years. I just don't see how adding another forty or so pushups to my routine could actually improve my physique. I agree, it would be a great thing to brag about, but in terms of how I'd look in the mirror, I don't think the extra forty pushups in a row would do much. Maybe it would add a little to tricep volume and definition, but not much else. |

OP this is a good idea. Take a basic but slightly demanding exercise and see if you can reach a goal with it. I can think of MANY more exercises that are more helpful to ones health. However, this is a very simple and fast exercise that can be done anytime. And it only takes a minute (much less in my case) to find out if you can get to 100. I may have to pass on this one for now, however, and see if there are some easier alternatives. |
