Have you had any interesting ones lately? Today in one class we were doing animals and one activity was to name four birds, mammals, insects, and reptiles. For birds one student was having trouble thinking of four and so I asked her 'What kind of food do you eat at ___________? [name of a local restaurant that serves smoked duck]'.
'Ah, duck!' she figured out.
So I asked 'What do you eat at Castle Chicken? [another nearby restaurant]. ... a blank. 'OK, what kind of food do you eat at Texicana Chicken ... Dongkee Chicken?'. ... still blank. 'What kind of bird do you eat at fried chicken restaurants'? ... still no clue.
And this was a reasonably smart student in a good class. It's just funny where students who don't have the chance to practice English often enough draw blanks. |

We worked on greetings all last week. This morning I was walking to the teacher's office when I saw a couple of students. I said "How are you?" and kept walking. They couldn't manage an answer until I was well past them, screaming at me from the other end of the hall "I'm fine-uh!" |
