Colbert Report: He's Singin' In Korean

To prove he's more influential than Korean pop star "Rain," Comedy Central TV newscaster Stephen Colbert made his own Korean pop video!

This parody of Korean pop star "Rain" by American comedian Stephen Colbert is hilarious! And what is equally funny is how Koreans took the skit.

Koreans did not understand the parody and got offended by Colbert's skit, as shown by the editorial pages of major Korean news agencies.

See what these Korean news agencies wrote:
The Chosun Ilbo: http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200705/200705140015.html
Sports Chosun:
http://sports.chosun.com/news/ntype.htm?ut=1&name=/news/entertainment/200705/20070514/75n02203.htm
YTN News: http://www.ytn.co.kr/_ln/0106_200705141614332886
YTN Star: http://www.ytnstar.co.kr/_ln/0103_200705141011077999

They were pissed! All those Korean news agencies were offended by the skit. Check those sites out and the messages posted by readers. Hahaha.

Total misunderstanding! They got in all wrong!

In fact, Colbert has done Rain, and the Korean pop culture industry, a world of good by publicizing Rain in this skit. After all, Rain and all other Korean pop stars are virtually unknown in America and this gave Americans a rare glimpse into the Korean pop world.

We can not underestimate just how much this coverage of Rain by the Colbert Report will help Rain and the Korean pop industry.

So goes an example of a cultural misunderstanding. See the video clip. It's hilarious!

Very Happy

When it happened some Koreans did their usual "freak out about everything" and they burned some American flags, but then a couple kyopos (yeah, they can actually defend the USA when they feel like it) actually defended Colbert, so the rage subsided.

I think some non-Americans don't get American humor and they don't go by the American idea that bad press is still good press. If an American celebrity got a parody made about him, he would laugh it off to prevent people from saying he's uptight or has no sense of humor. Even then, I think referring to Rain as "Kid Jong Il" isn't exactly a compliment to Rain or the country he represents, and it makes Colbert in the role of a newscaster who should know about world politics seem like an idiot.

Apparently you don't know/don't get Colbert's persona on his show.

Maybe I don't since I don't watch American TV and I don't think Koreans do either.

this has very little to do with colbert, but a quick scan through the channels on your television here should convince anyone that koreans do in fact watch american television.

I meant they might not understand Colbert's persona.

The Dance Revolution dance-off was fun.

Korean netizens are the worst in the world. And for some reason people, celebs in particular seem to be taking whatever they have to say quite seriously.

Can't recall the name of the poor little Korean singer who offed herself early this year or late last year after the internet "wolf pack" (Colbert quote) inundated her with nasty comments and emails.

Anyway, Colbert rocks! Not quite as good as Stewart but getting there!

I showed all my classes the dance off video as well as Colbert's parody and they thought it was REALLY funny. Some demanded to see it twice.

Yeah, but they don't watch American comedies. The only thing that resembles an American comedy I've seen on tv here is Monk, and that's pretty tame.

30 rock, how i met your mother, the office, that '70s show, friends nearly constantly . . . need i go on? i do agree that the humor involved with colbert and virtually any piece of american or even non-korean humor is lost on most koreans, but i find it a bit unrealistic to argue that koreans aren't expose to this brand of programming.
