UNTRUE.

Just get someone to write (in Korean) a simple "I quit effective <date>" note and hand it to your principal. (bypass your pain in the ass co-teacher). Do NOT give it to your co-teacher or you WILL get pissed on because it won't make it to the principal.

If you want your deposit back, give appropriate notice.

If you don't care, just tell them you quit and simply walk out.

Do you know of any GEPIK teachers which have quit and given their two months notice ,yet couldnt get a LETTER OF RELEASE and didnt get their 900 000 won ?
When I write the LETTER OF RESIGNATION , should I include the reasons why Im quiting , or do you think that will just add insult to injury.
I heard that the Principle losses face when a teacher quits or worse run.

HAAHAHAA , I cant beelive that a co teacher would not give a letter of resignation to the Princicle.

If i were to simply walk out ( which I d love to do ) , Im assuming that I wouldnt be able to get another job without a letter of release.

Someone told me ,that you no longer need the letter of release , is this true?

If one does the second and quits and simply walks out, does that person get hassled at the airport, turn in their ARC card, get hassled about owing airfare, etc.?

Nope.

Walk out the door.
Grab your bags on the way to the airport.
Hand in your ARC as you pass through passport control.
Have a nice flight to your next destination (or home if that is where you are headed).

I only know of 2 instances where a LOR was requested and it was given in both cases. Unlike SMOE the GEPIK contract REQUIRES the school to cancel your visa if you quit early (effectively the same as an LOR).

I do not know of anyone who gave proper notice who lost their deposit (other than having the unpaid /outstanding utilities taken from it).

The co-teacher would't give it to the principal in the faint hope that you would change your mind. S/he would fear your leaving early because the principal will want to know why (from them) and deride them severely for your early departure. Depending on your status in the school (amongst the admin staff) it may cost the co-teacher their position (requiring them to get moved to a lower school).

Do not give a reason (unless you can speak directly (not through your co-teacher) to the principal. It will only add fuel to the fire.

So, why are you quitting? Did you take your grievance up the chain?

Expat, I've been where you are. I went through this just after Christmas last year in a Gepik public school. I found it best to be honest and write an official resignation letter outlining exactly why I was leaving early. It did not go over well with my principal or co-teacher but eventually, they accepted it.
I had to be really firm but also make a point of being professional and obliging when they tried to "punish" me for my decision by telling me to leave a month earlier than my 2 months notice (hence I had to pay back the airfare).

As for the LoR and deposit, I actually wrote up a letter of release myself and had it translated into Korean and insisted that it be signed. At first, they did not want to sign it, but they eventually came around thanks to my co-teacher and a few favorable outside influences. I didn't threaten them exactly... but I think they took it that way and decided it was in everyone's best interest to sign.

Had a little problem getting the deposit back but it was solved quickly when I brought my recruiter into the picture. I found that being firm about the things I wanted and was entitled to only worked when I was willing to submit to some of their attempts to regain control of the situation... ie: staying late at school to make lesson plans and submit them each day even though it was vacation time.

In any case, I'm sure every school and situation will differ but I really think if you are firm with your school, but are also willing to oblige them in some way to make them feel in control, all the while maintaining your professionalism and integrity, you really should have the upper hand.

They owe you that deposit money unless the contract has changed. As for the LoR, they need to understand that refusing to give you one will not help them in the future.

All the best and I hope everything works out for you!

Public schools only have one full-time E2 visa they can grant at any one time.

If they REFUSE to give a Letter of release, they can't give a visa to anyone else.

So, if they want to replace you, they must release you.

Hope this helps some of you.

This is not quite accurate.

Many of the elementary schools (including the one I work at) in our district have 2 - E2 teachers on staff. At one point we actually had 3 on staff at my school.

All on E2? ALL full-time or some part-time OR in an after school program?

Then they have gone to Immigration and received special permission to have more than 1 visa at a time. But MOST schools have only one available, at a time.

All E2, all full time.

As long as the school is prepared to sign on the dotted line for sponsorship and they have the classes to justify the positions they can have as many as their budget (from whatever level it comes from {city, province or federal}) can afford.

Still, to fill that slot, they gotta clear the visa at Immigration, which means LOR. Teachers need to know this.

I didnt bother complaining to the principle. From what I see and hear ,he thinks Im spoiled. And regarless of wha the contract says , I should be more then willing to come in on Saturdays. Their are a few other problems , however if I were to list them , Imay in fact reveil my identity.
There are certain things that the school should have told me about prior to signing ,which they didnt.
Some of the teachers have even said to me , that for wahtever reason , management just isnt paying attention to me and not giving me any respect.
