I know of alot of expats have either used or heard of this website for meeting people in Korea. Well in my case I got burned by them. I met a few girls and they were really weird, they only cared about one thing, learning english.
And to top it off my account was canceled for being abusive, wtf.
Well anyways, I was googling and I came across this.
Now we can put a face to who is running this site and what they are up to.
Go to youtube and just type in 'ublove' and you see everything.
Also check out this entry made by Brian in Jeollanam-do and his two cents on this website as well.
http://briandeutsch.blogspot.com/2008/05/ubloves-bad-idea.html
Let's ban together and boycott them!
Please post any comments if you also got burned like me. |

I think that link is to Smee's blog. (I didn't actually click it, so I may be wrong.)
Anyway, I met my current girlfriend on Ublove. I didn't register there to find a girlfriend. I just wanted some random play as well as Korean practice. However, her and I clicked and I couldn't be happier. And for the record, not all girls who use that site are crazy or just looking for English practice. Although I'm sure many are. |

UBLove used to be good but changed ownership a few months ago and it's gone downhill fast. Get at least one ridiculously obvious fake message every week. My favorite was from jane48226 who's "Looking For True Love":

C'mon man, does the concept of "subtlety" not exist in Korea?
UBLove has gone the way of other Korean online companies; greedy unscrupulous ajoshis who sit at their computers all day creating fake members and sending fake messages to lighten the wallets of unsuspecting foreigners. |

No disrespect, but do you ever wonder if she was doing the same thing on ublove as you?
I don't think I would ever 'seriously' date a girl I met from the internet, does that make me narrow minded? |

aren't there threads & threads on this? from the title, I thought someone had resurrected the 'fake' profile creations to try to catch DESL posters again (back from the old Denz/Me/Gangahgee days gone by).
Before I met C., I had some good dating experiences out of there (UBLove), and know a number of people who found what they were looking for - whatever that may have been at the time. In fact, after C & I met, we met some nice girls through there still. It was definitely less money oriented than any of the FriendFinder options, and was open to foreigners - unlike some of the popular K-sites, that required a Korean ID to sign up.
They also had social events (the meet ups), and I know people in Japan who swear by the site for that reason alone. (if you go to Japan on a regular basis, like we did, it is a nice option to make friends before you travel someplace).
Hmmm - I just tried a youtube / ublove search on google, and only got a link for a Korean pro-UBL piece, and a couple of 'success match' stories? I'd like to see the link for the 'real deal' video, and know about the changes.
UB (the poster) - any time I/we got a spam-type mail, I'd report it. And customer service was really good about following up & banning spammers/exploiters when they found them. And do not think the kind of 'fleecing' mentality is reserved for foreigners, or limited to Korea. Like a friend says about Vegas "you know, they don't build those cool hotels by giving away money in jackpots." At their worst, online sites are electronic versions of hustle-juicy bars & KTV parlors. I def. think that UB isn't ALL about fleecing; I do think they need more staff to separate wheat from the chaff.
i4NI - it might, in this day and age. I'm guessing when cars first came along, there were women who would 'never' date a man who drove one of those 'contraptions,' and limited themselves to the horse/bicycle bachelor set. There are real, attractive-to-your-individual-standards women out all over the world - but you might never know about some of them without using all the tools at your disposal - and the interwebz is a powerful one. Yeah, the filtering process can be a pain, but by eliminating the option entirely might not be the best of ideas.
I had said I didn't want to date an American woman again - yet I did meet one, and fell in love in time, regardless of her nationality. No regrets there.
Gino - congrats, man. Hope you 2 are happy. I know a fair number of similar stories, from a few dating sites, MySpace, Facebook, etc. Good on ya! |

I met my wife on UB Love.
If you're looking to meet a lady who either is isn't the run-of-the-mill Korean culture escapist (meaning they don't fit into their own culture) then UB Love may be for you.
I don't think I could have easily met a successful Korean woman like my wife by hanging out in traditional English teacher circles (plus I'm a bit older than early 20-something).
A lot of guys (and Korean ladies) use UB Love to troll for sex partners -- and are very forward about it -- I heard that from the girls I met. My best story is the 30-something Korean lady who picked me up in an Equs car. After dinner, she pulled me over and said she just wanted a guy to call and have sex with whenever she wanted. On her terms. I can you -- don't call me. Total playgirl. UB Love used to be full of them.
Some dating rules for UB Love:
1. If she claims to be your girlfriend, but can't meet you on Friday and Saturday nights consecutively, or is always coming up with excuses why she's busy -- dump her. She's got others. A Korean girl who is in love with you WILL FIND THE TIME.
2. If a girl is bringing you food and gifts, she likes you.
3. Try to kiss her three times. It's expected for her to refuse a few times, so she doesn't appear to be a *beep*. If she won't allow it after the third time, then leave her -- you're being used for English. |

UB LOVE IS EVIL!
I did get a girlfriend there once, but I'd avoid that site.
I paid for a month using PayPal. PayPal didn't want to accept from a foreign company, so they rejected the claim after a few days. (Actually, PayPal is evil, too, for not notifying me.)
So I get an e-mail from UB LOVE saying
Dear Mr. XXXX XXXXX,
We have been notified by our customer services team regarding your account.
Your account has been suspended and you will not be able to login.
It is under investigation due to your suspicious behavior. It appears that you upgraded your account using PayPal, and then used our site services. Then you contacted PayPal that you didn't make a payment for this site. But after checking your sent mail and the content we are fully aware that you knowingly commited fradulant activities.
We have all your account information, photos documented and your IP address has been tracked.
We will allow 3 days for you to answer this email and send us a payment to our
PayPal account at
Due to your actions we will be charging you a penalty of double the amount ( $22.50 x 2 = $45.00 ).
If you do not reply to this email within 3 days, we are going to terminate your account and contact the authorities.
We will also be sending a statement to the TV show Surprise to report your unethical behavior.
Regards,
UB Team
All I did was notify PayPal. Then I resent my payment along with a letter explaining the error. I also went on to say that I didn't appreciate their downright rude manner.
But yeah, in my profile, I mentioned that I sometimes work for MBC. Taking that bit of info, UBLOVE threatened to contact them to report me? It's a good wake up call to watch out for the info you post over the net. |

I guess if you're smart about it UBLove can be a good site. I met some interesting people through there my first year in Korea---ran into a couple of coworkers, too, ew---and I used the chat feature pretty regularly to practice Korean.
But for the past year or so I log in only about once a month. There's not many people in Jeollanam-do, so if I were trying to find a real-life friend the pickins are slim. Plus the only mail I get now is spam from Chinese or Russian women, almost always with something like "my other email is ." I don't remember the last time I got a legit mail or wink. Plus, every few days I get emails from them telling me to check out the hottest members, or sign up for some contest or other.
But it hasn't been a very costly experience. I became a premium member and signed up for six months. However, it took them about 3 weeks to process my application, and when I emailed and complained they gave me another six months for free. I ended up getting two years for the price of one that way. But, I won't be renewing my membership. |

Many women use it to find free English lessons.
Many men use it to find *beep* partners.
Sounds fair to me. |

I met my wife on UB Love, too. If you're careful and sensible it's an extremely efficient way to meet someone - much better than just hoping to meet someone randomly.
And by the way, my wife was just looking for someone to practise her English with, too - but she changed her mind about that pretty quickly!
Our little boy had his first birthday in July. |

Cuz there's nothing quite so romantic as extreme efficiency...
Seriously though, congratulations!
|
