Junk jewelry you can get almost anywhere.

If you mean REAL precious and semi-precious stones, they are a bad buy here (something to do with the 100% import tariff when they are imported). Wait until you can travel and hit a duty free port (like Hong Kong or Singapore).

Even with the tariff (I don't have any time to plan an international trip) where's a good place to buy some?

Koh Sahn Road in Bangkok is a great place to get all kinds of "crap" and things that are pretty nice, too.

Chiang Mai's night market is legendary for what you can find there.

IF you're heading that way, I'll add, which I don't recommend because of the current agitation.

While I do like the idea of planing a trip around getting a gift that will be forgotten three weeks after it's given. (If I had the time I would seriously do it becuase of the utterly retarded nature of it) I need to try to find something "local". it doesn't help that I have absolutly no knowledge of it at all,(afterall I can't ask her becuase that would ruin the whole thing) but that's half of the fun. Very Happy Anyway I gots about a month to track down something half decent.

In some of the jewelry stores in the Hamilton Hotel they sell crystal balls and such. I have a friend who is into this stuff so I suffered through her pricing them one day. There were some crystal and some amethyst. I remember that the prices of the same size ball varied wildly from one vendor to another. You're bound to get ripped off, but hey, if you really need something....

Amethyst seems to be popular in Korea. Not sure how "precious" it is.

Amethyst is mined here and is really good quality. If you're buying jewelry, you have to be careful you're buying real amethyst and not synthetic stuff, 'cause there's a lot of that around of course.
