I teach at a small Univ. Tomorrow we start classes. I thought I was just teaching one writing class but I was chatting with a Korean/English exchange partner.
I asked her what 영 작 문 was cause I was too lazy to look it up. She said it was English essays or whatever. That means I'm teaching 3 composition classes.
Wow. These courses require 3 hours at least of grading per class hour of time (Korean student's have a lot of trouble with written language, but also with structure and content).
But the thing is they told me I'd have one writing class. I have a great job and everyone is sweet but if this is true I feel utterly betrayed. |

Hmm, I guess we know why they're so "sweet" to you. You're the nice foreigner teaching all the composition classes. hehe |

Obviously, I do not know exactly what they said to you, but it sounds to me like it was probably a miscommunication of some sort. Who knows. Maybe, I am wrong. Anyways, congratulations on getting the university job.
Just to put things in perspective for you, I teach 5 subject classes and supervise 1 distance learning class at the international school where I work. All in all, it works out to be 19 and half hours of teaching per week. Of course, I also have to do a decent amount of grading and writing lesson plans for each class. |

How big are the classes? If they're just too large, you could go with 1) peer editing and 2) an end of term portfolio |

Maybe they were trying to say THREE sections of ONE writing class?
Teaching writing takes a lot of work outside of class, but if you choose your writing assignment topics carefully, you can learn a whole lot more about Korea and Koreans than you will in a conversation class.
Good luck. |
