The Japanese already paid reparations to South Korea.
Why would they have to do it again?
And Italy's decision might have a little something to do with oil. |

Might want to check Korea's steel and auto industry to see where reparations went. |

Obviously you don't know the definition of reparations. While most of Korea's chaebols got started with help from Japan, I hardly would call that reparations being paid. |

Japan's government really should. But they won't. Their attitude is like "whatever." |

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/reparations
Quote: |
1. the making of amends for wrong or injury done: reparation for an injustice.
2. Usually, reparations. compensation in money, material, labor, etc., payable by a defeated country to another country or to an individual for loss suffered during or as a result of war.
3. restoration to good condition. |
The monies paid from Japan in reparations, and the ones committed to by the Italians seem very similar to me.
Mind showing me the difference? |

Reparations from Japan came in the form of both cash and technology/educational aid.
The cash was used by President Park to develop the steel industry and develop areas of the country (except of course Jeolla....they got screwed).
The technology. Japan showed Korea how to develop and build cars using Japanese technology and was crucial in the start of Hyundai Automotive.
Koreans don't recognize this. It's much more fun to guilt trip your neighbour. |

It's especially fun to guilt trip a neighbor that not only was as atrocious and despicable as Japan was, but also amusing considering that so far their government has yet to truly admit full culpability or fess up to the extent of the viciousness they wreaked upon the peninsula (to say nothing of what they did to a number of other countries as well).
I know if my neighbor every forced my grandfather to abondon his own name and language and put to slavery working to better the family next door while my grandmother was forced in to sexual slavery....my neighbor better not only fess up when its all said and done, he better get on his knees and beg forgivness (to say the least).
Generally speaking Koreans get out of hand with their nationalism but Japan is one area where they get a pass. When the Japanese really make a true apology (like they ever will) then the Koreans will need to learn to pipe down. Lets remember there are people still alive who remember the occupation. It wasnt that long ago. |

What would qualify as a "true apology" in your books? |

There's an official apology for the comfort women.

There's an official apology for trying to colonize Korea...

Ah..This is good...A list of 43 different apologies. And while not all of them are perfect, you have to be happy with at least one of them.
Or do you want a brand-new apology every year? |

I read somewhere recently that the new administration had retracted the apology for the comfort women claiming insufficient proof that they existed or something. |

Japan has apologized many times. Korea has never accepted an apology. |

Kind of like how the lifespan of the Korean people doubled under Japanese occupation.
It's tough to hear, I know. However, the general quality of life under Chosun rule was far worse than that under Japanese rule. I'm not justifying Japanes colonialization, but perhaps you should look at yourself before critisizing others.
For example, let's go ape s$it over Dokdo, yet say nothing about the human rights abuses, sexual exploitation, and modern day slavery of Korean people living now just north of the 38th.
This is the sole reason why I find it difficult to have sympathy for the Koreans. Basically take care of your own house first, before going after others. |
