I wasn't about to mention all the great eps from those seasons. I have other things to do. If all 40 were great, would I (or anyone) list all of them to make a point? No. I gave a few examples. |

I'd say the top 3 sitcoms in terms of longevity vs. quality control vs. casting vs. writing would be (in no numerical order)
1. The Honeymooners
2. M.A.S.H.
3. Frasier
There are a plethora of other noteworthy sitcoms: I Love Lucy, All In The Family, Three's Company, The Jeffersons, Friends, but these 3 were consistently excellent, even when there were cast changes.
The latter two seasons of Seinfeld were insanely bad. They were coasting on fumes, whereas Frasier remained uniformly excellent from start to finish. |
"For those who know comedy?" Ugh, what a horrible self-important phrase. And you're insane and wrong about Frasier being that great and the last two seasons of Seinfeld being bad.
A lot of critics were smitten with Frasier because it was all very posh and he made literary references and whatnot. But the comedy itself wasn't that great. |

| Frasier was quite good for awhile but it started to go downhill. Shows never know when to quit while they are ahead. Once Daphne and Miles started to get together I stopped watching. |

FACTS;
- Seinfeld went off air years ago, but it's still the best show on TV!!!!!
- Seinfeld's demographics (re-runs) out-awesome even the most popular
of current TV shows.
- Seinfeld's jokes are timeless. They are simply the best! |

The correct answer is:
True, Seinfeld is the greatest sitcom of all time.
No, kidding... that's just my opinion, obviously, but Seinfeld, to me, is by far the funniest show ever. The middle years of The Simpsons coming in second.
I didn't read all of this thread, but... to the guy who's saying people who know comedy would find Frasier better than Seinfeld... um... wow. |

Seinfeld is up there, but for my money Arrested Development is where it's at. However, it should be viewed as more of a miniseries/drama than a sitcom. Start from S1E1 and work your way up.

My GF raves on and on about Seinfeld, but it never really took off back in the UK. I've seen a few episodes, but it never make me laugh out loud like Arrested Development did.
I've just shipped the boxset of series 1~5 of Curb out to K-land. Can't wait for it to arrive. |

I never got into Arrested Development. When it was (is it still?) on television, it had a really late timeslot and didn't seem to be watched by anybody so I thought it wasn't anything special.
When I came here, people seemed to really get into it so I figure it really took off since I saw it back then.
Is it worth picking up from Season 1? |

I had so many favorites.. and I watched a balance of british and american sitcoms growing up.. 50-50
some of my favs were considering I was like 8-15 years old for most of these I wonder how I understood half the stuff, I probably didnt but man it was funny thats all I rememeber...

Seinfeld was pretty good, but I think I'd have to go with Arrested Development for a couple of reasons. One is that it has a great structure and elaborate setups which to me, make the jokes funnier.
The other big one is the lack of a laugh track on Arrested development. After watching a lot of simpsons, futurama, and home movies, when I went back to watching live action sitcoms, I just find laugh tracks unbearable. I find it really uncomfortable not knowing whether I actually found something funny or the sound of other people laughing made me laugh because of a subconscious reaction.
Also, I think everyone has forgotten about Night Court. |

I'm surprised no one has mentioned home movies on this thread. That show was pretty hilarious, and it had a great Brendon small soundtrack.h The only real problem with the show was that the character McGurk, kind of became a running gag.
