Gustav is hitting as a Class H2 Hurricane, only 110 mph as of noon Central time.

I guess now would be the time to wish anyone affected by this hurricane, whether residents of New Orleans or not, all the best. Hope things go as well as can be expected there.

I understand that most residents have evacuated and the emergency-response system is well positioned and poised to act. Worst case scenario: more property damage, entailing longer civil reconstruction, etc. But I would be surprised to hear news of any injuries or deaths this time around.

Just saw this headline on MSNBC...

Quote:
Storm weakens to a Category 1 hurricane as it moves over Louisiana. Water sloshes over some levees, but officials expect them to hold.

It's not often that prayers are made from my house, but they are certainly in LA.

Note that W. Bush and D. Cheney will miss the Republican Convention to monitor this situation. That is because, unlike the Democrats and their obsession with S. Palin's personal life, Republicans place country first.

CNN Reports

Really? It's not putting the country first--it's smart politics. If they drop the ball on this one like they did with Katrina, they know they'll all be run out of town, tarred and feathered. Anyways, if you're still doing this song and dance for the Republicans after 8 years of their disasterous policies, ain't nothing gonna' change your mind about them.

I'm pretty sure the families of the 1500 people who died wouldn't put it so glibly. I'm sure everybody who's a victim wouldn't dismiss the pathetic FEMA/DHS response so easily either.

I really like the italicized "etc". It's only property damage. These people have been through so much and after trying to rebuild, to see your efforts go to waste would be truly awful. I'm hoping for the best here.

Notice that you're the only one who somehow saw a connection between Palin's uterus and Gustav. I wonder what that says about you...

add J. McCain, the next president of the United States to that list...

Since 1960, candidates running on the ticket of the party that is completing two terms in the White House, hoping to win a third, usually lose. Richard M. Nixon in 1960, Hubert Humphrey in 1968, Gerald Ford in 1976 and Al Gore in 2000 are the cases in point. Only George H.W. Bush defied this rule in 1988, in the midst of an economic boom, "but nobody has ever been elected to a third term for the same party in bad economic times," Beckel noted. "No one's ever been elected to a third term when you have an unpopular war. And most importantly, no one has been elected to a third term with an unpopular incumbent president. . . . Yet McCain has all three of those problems."

Laughing Reese,

I was a member of Storm2K back when it was a chatroom named Storm99. (Wario was still in junior high.) A photochop friend from there made the 'Rumble' pic.

You and those you allude to must have very closed-minds, Reese. 'Tis the season when storms collide.

Louisiana:

"There were several deaths in the state of Louisiana: six patients died of natural causes while waiting for air ambulances to evacuate them from southern Louisiana (three from Calcasieu Parish and three from Jefferson Parish).[106] In Baton Rouge, a tree fell on a house, killing two people who had evacuated from further south in Louisiana.[107] A man only described as being 27 years old was killed in a similar incident in north Lafayette.[107] A man in St. Francisville was killed after a tree limb fell on his head.[108] Another fatality was reported as a motorist crashed on Gustav-soaked highways between Baton Rouge and New Orleans,[109] two others suffered carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator in Calcasieu Parish,[110] another died from a house fire due to a blown candle in St. Martinville[110] and natural causes were to blame for another in Lafourche Parish. After Gustav weakened to a tropical depression, several tornadoes were spawned including one (rated EF2) that killed two near Mamou during the early hours of September 3. The tornado also injured two others."

I saw a figure of 18 deaths attributed to Gustav in the USA, in a recent google news search.

Oh, & many folks are still without power.
