I have been informed by my boss this morning that I should prepare to go for my health check tomorrow morning. I said ok. During my last class tonight, she decided to tell me that I need a passport photo. Oh well, I don't have one. She replied that we will go on Wednesday instead and I can get one before work tomorrow. Fair enough.
From reading, I knew this information which is on the Hi Korea site:

Ok, that is fair enough. However, I have been talking to my coworkers. One of them informed me that I will need to do a whole slew of other things when I go there that are really not needed:
1. Vision Test - I have 20/20 vision ... I am good!
2. Hand Strength Test - I don't have friggin' arthritis already.
3. Chest X-Ray - This is ok with me, but I am good.
4. Blood Work to include a host of other information about me to my employer.
5. Complete Dental Check - What the hell does this have to do with the price of tea in China or if I can teach!
It is number 4 that bothers me. A coworker of mine did this. For whatever reason, his liver count (whatever that is) was high. So, my boss decided to basically call him an alcoholic in front of everyone. She has proceeded to give him the health talk about his drinking. He quit drinking for a month and the count went dramatically down. However, now he is fearful of even having a beer in front of our boss. He is irritated with the way she handled the situation.
Well, I am wondering how I bypass all of this crap that I don't really need. I want to approach my boss about it for two reasons: a) I don't want to be sitting at the hospital forever before work and b) I don't want her to spread my information all over my school. I have been in Thailand for the last 4+ months not working. I have been drinking excessively and traveling around.
Any thoughts? |

| Go take the tests alone. The test is for immigration purposes. Your boss has no reason to see the results. It is none of her business and you should tell her as much. You either pass or fail. That is all she needs to know and you need to tell your doctor this very clearly. |

question:
Is this:
a) the test for immigration prior to getting your ARC?
b) the public service medical for a public school (different and free)?
If a) then do it at your convenience and before your 90 days expire.
If b) then just do it because it really is about your health and your philandering in Thailand won't matter.

It is for immigration only. My boss is insisting that I go with her. I don't think she knows what the rules are and gets the full workup or something. My understanding is that I just need the HIV and TBPE (I think) tests. |

Insist that she doesn't. You already know she is a nosey beach and you know why she wants to go with you...so she can talk crap about you in front of your co-workers.
Why would you put up with this? |

Just have the results sent to you, not to your boss. You can then take the results to immi yourself.
You might want to have a Korean friend go over the results with you just in case something isn't right. |

Thing is though you need to make it absolutely clear to your doctor that they may not discuss your test results with anyone but you. One of my bosses called the hospital after I went in and the doctor talked about my situation ("for insurance purposes") with my boss without my permission. That will never happen again. |

I'm holding off on getting some health stuff checked (funny looking skin growths, possible heart trouble) until I go home because the moment I get something done here it goes back to my school.
OP. Dont' tell your boss where you got your medical done. Even if she doesnt go with you, she will just call and ask. |

You should never get your health test done with your employer. I had an employer annonce my Blood Pressure to everyone. If I had been in an advanced country I would have been able to sue |

This is the first time I've heard of heavy drinking being unfavorable for a man's reputation at a job in Korea. I guess it's because the boss is female. |

There is no confidentiality of medical records in this country. If you are healthy it's no big deal. But if you have a problem, you can expect your medical condition to be openly discussed by the Koreans in your office.
I have seen teachers get fired for being pregnant and I have seen a teacher get fired for getting cancer.
I hope your health is sparkling. |

It's becouse he's not Korean. Total double standard. Koreans are permited to puke and piss in public but how dare a foreigner even get tipsy. Or have a bad liver on a confidential report.
I had the same high liver blood reading once. I had the test done without the presence of a nosy co-worker. I wonder what the law is in this country. It's really none of their buisness and you should be allowed to sue. |

patient confidentiality? huh? i mentioned on another post that my drug test came out positive because of over-the-counter cold medication. the nurse at the front desk called my school and told my employer that i needed to take the test again because my drug test was "positive" for trace. she didn't give my boss any other explanation, so when i was handed the phone, my director told me we'd "talk about it" when i got back to school, then she hung up on me. needless to say, i had them call her back immiediately and give more details as to why there was trace in my system.
DO NOT let your employer come with you. it is none of their business unless you fail the tests. all of the exams are B.S. and the whole lot of them take about 30 minutes to complete. ridiculous, possibly, but most of us need a check-up (no matter how crappy) every now and then. |

Yeah, you're right about that. I keep in touch periodically with the physician who had a hospital next to my previous hagwon. One night during a meal he says to me "So XXXXXX (previous coworker) was in my office today. He was asking me to prescribe to him Viagra." |
