A while ago I posted here what I thought and still do think was a racist and unhelpful piece published by a Korean newspaper, and kindly translated by Koreabeat. The article likened certain foreigners to poison mushrooms and viruses http://koreabeat.com/?p=1626
Now this is maybe an apology...I'm not sure.

Seoul.com, "We must be patient yet be prudent to see what this future will bring"
Seoul, 2008-09-01 [14:59] (Korea Newswire)-- When the news of Seoul.com(www.seoul.com) opening a forum for the native English speaking teachers who are working in Korea as english instructors to discuss various aspects of living and working in korea, released on the internet, the Korea Beat, a club for the foreign English teachers in Korea, immediately translated this news in English. Shortly after the release of the forum, there were voices that this move would simply create another possibility of a new Anti-Foreign site on the internet.
There are already more than 15,000 legal native English speaking teachers who are living and working Korea. If we added the illegal teachers, then the number is going up to approximately 40,000. It is speculated that the number will soon exceed 100,000.
With this type of numbers, there will always be good and bad guys.
There were some bad guys reported as teaching English without E2 Visa visiting company or houses for personal teaching. Some were reporting people smoking marijuana or even having improper relationship with local Korean girls and more. Some of these reported people were deported from the country already.
Seoul.com has no argument about these, because these bad people violated the law. Korea has a right to filter them out.
There was one particular Korean internet cafe, whose members would aggressively track those illegal aliens aggressively and brought them to public prosecutor to face their crimes. Even if these illegal aliens were responsible for their actions, it definitely caught attention of the legal aliens in Korea too. It probably brought a sour taste to their mouth for knowing that there was a group of people who solely dedicate their time tracking down illegal aliens. Under such circumstance, perhaps, these legal alien may be worried that the Seoul.com Forum might be yet another Anti-foreigner site.
Seoul.com acknowledged the current situation.
Some asked, why are Koeans silent about 300,000 illegal Koreans residing in the USA and Canada, while are so against only 30,000 illegal aliens in Korea?
Some view that this is not a unique situation for those English teachers in Korea, but is common in any community in the world; therefore, the blame should not just rest on these English teachers in Korea.
Yes. Seoul.com agrees on that point too.
Well, such things are happening all the time in everywhere.
There are always the die-hard patriots, and those who would die opposing them.
Seoul.com reviewed its news release again after the KOREA BEAT pointed out some phrase and words in their news. We believe that the words were misunderstood in their context; however, they were not created to attack or damage anyones views. However, we understand that this is a very sensitive issue and we will be more sensitive to such issues in the future.
They also should stop laughing at our poor English.
Our English is much better than their Korean, but anyway, if we spoke English well, then why should we invite them in the first place?
They must also understand that Koreans have very strong unwritten morals and respect towards the seniors and elders, outside the written laws.
This means, even if something is legal, but if we were morally challenged, then we will not carry out such an act. It is cultural clash between Korea and western peoples.
For an example, although we do not see this any more, but there was an crazy big avitar of one user, whose face looked like drug user, and open the buttons of shirts and loading bullets on his gun. It was a flash avatar and if it is still on the net, then it will probably drive many older generation Koreans crazy and mad.
Another icon, a cat wearing a headphone, and bobbing its head by music, that one might be welcomed for young Koreans, but may be not for seniors. "Koreans must make all the English teachers think and act just like native Koreans.
If we are still arguing about these little issues, then there is no side will achieve any results, any time soon.
Seoul.com is neutral and we want to provide a fair chance for both side.
Korea opened its door to invite young English teachers to teach our children, to aim a global society, and the culture which was brought by the young people are now crashing with existing Korean culture and trying to make a new mixed culture.
We must be patient yet be prudent to see what this future will bring. That is the key of Seoul.com Forum.
We need to learn their new and logical concept as well as English, and they must learn Korean culture of statics, and soul of Orient.

Ahh...so there is a clash of cultures because Koreans have high moral standards Could have fooled me.

Most foreigners are more concerned with "written" rather than "unwritten" laws. For example, tax, pension, contract, and labor laws.
Thanks again Korea Beat.

Dear Seoul.com,
Shove it up yer keester. And don't forget what Ecclesiastes said:
"All was vanity, and grasping for the wind.
There was no profit under the sun.
For both the wise man and the fool die.
After death, there is no more remembrance of the wise than of the fool." |

I love the way they just state it as fact that their competence level in English is better than any foreigner's competence level in Korean. That alone is indicative of a biased viewpoint. |

My avatar appeals to irrational Koreans of all ages, so I'm good.
What a ridiculous letter and what an asshole. Not worth a response . . . but oooooh so tempting to give one. |
