I am not looking for a specific number but rather a guesstimate of the percentage of new ideas that are created.
An example would be the cell phone. First created as a hand phone in 1921 and subsequently improved into different forms as technology evolved.
While its constantly re-sold as the latest and best invention, its not really a new idea.
I was reading the regurgitation of old ideas remarketed as new ideas on some of these discussion topics and wondered how many new ideas does the human race really generate in a 100 year period.
I read an argument once between the athiests and the christians in the 1920's and almost word for word it follows the main basic arguments you can see on any of these forums.
Does humanity create new ideas or are we just regurgitating what we have learnt from some one else and is it possible for the general public to have new ideas or do we rely on those individuals of genius level to create them.
What do you think? |

The internet is pretty new.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say there have been more new inventions following the industrial revolution than any time in human history. |

I think the previous quote sums things up best. No scientific theory can be made without utilizing first the scientific theories that already have been proven. I think it's the same with inventions. They are steps toward greater discoveries but are not wholly independent of previous discoveries. |

| Other than technology, I dont think much is new. Its like when the first Matrix movie came out. The idea for that movie came from Platos time. Darwins theory of evolution was also similar to ancient Greek philosophy about fishes turning into other animals (he just added adaptation, improved on it, and did research) Most stories are from older stories, and musicians always have a hard time making original music because people before them have already come up with similar compositions. People just like to think their ideas are unique. |

| I'd say actually original ideas are largely limited to the realms of science and philosophy and everything else is based on those. |
