Not exactly an answer to your question, but you may find this helpful:

And, to answer your question:
US passport photo size is 2" x 2" (51mm x 51 mm). Most subway photo booths will have an option for this size; alternatively, if you go to a photo shop, tell the photographer "미국 여권 사진" (miguk yeogwon sajin), which means "American passport photo." If this doesn't register, tell him the dimensions or write them down for him.

Photo shop: go to a downtown-type area (lots of storefronts) and look for Kodak or Fuji signs. If you're in a city of any size at all, you shouldn't have much trouble finding one.
Photo booths are commonly found in subway stations, at least in Seoul. I can't speak to the situation in Busan. |

I just renewed my passport last month.
I got the photo taken in the photo booth at the embassy. I look about ten years older than I am. It didn't help that I was hot and sweaty.
My previous photo was taken by a photographer at a studio--I look like James Bond.
I'd go for a studio. Bring your passport, so you can point at the picture while speaking English they don't understand, and you can nod and point at the picture when they respond in Korean you can't understand. Works every time. |

I can add that at least for the Canadian embassy, the photo booth photos are not accepted. Hard to imagine that the U.S. embassy would be so lax to accept them, but hey I guess so. At the photo studio the photographer stamped the back with the name of the studio, date, etc. Hope this helps... |

Canada requires the photographer's info to be printed on the back of passport photos: http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/korea/renewal-en.asp
The US has no such requirement: see the link posted above for complete info on US passport photo requirements and best practices.
As long as the dimensional and quality requirements are met, photo booth photos are perfectly acceptable. |

I've used photo studios twice in Korea. They are quite good because they really try and 'model' you. They'll get you to pose just right, adjust the lighting and take several pictures until they're happy with a few, then they'll give you a choice if which one you want.
At the first studio I went to though there was a bit of a wait, since the studio was already in use for a baby photo or a fake wedding photo or something. So the photographer gave me his portfolio to look at. He handed it to me already open at a specific page. It was a photo of him naked. "This my nu-duh poto!" he informed me. The next few pages were also nudes of him. The rest of the portfolio were normal artistic type shots of fountains or flowers or something. I really don't see why he needed to show me THAT page so urgently.. |

Easy to do yourself.
I pointed the camera at myself, and took about 3 dozen photos. I put them on my computer. The one I like the best I had printed at a Fuji center. I just said "Passport size".. they cost 1,000 each.
Really, that is all I did and they were fine. |

I agree about going to any photo studio. What luvnpeas said about bringing your passport will easily get the point across, although of course it's faster if you can bring a Korean. The photographer scolded me for laughing during the "serious" shots, but it was impossible to keep a straight face as he fluffed my hair, blotted my nose and adjusted my clothing, then tilted my head various directions while shouting, "Okay now SMAHL!" Easily the best portrait shots I've ever had, though; I think he even touched them up a bit. |
