Since there are a lot of people who have recently arrived in Korea with the September intake for public schools and the like, I thought I'd repost information on pension fund payments for South Africans.

South Africans are EXEMPT from making pension fund payments. We are the only English teachers that this applies to, so odds are your school/director/recruiter won't know about it.

It's money down the drain. You won't get anything back, and the school also loses money since they have to match your payments. So make sure your school knows that you don't need to make these payments.

Here's a link to a document from the Korean National Pension Service (NPS), both in Korean and English, that lists the nationalities that are exempt from making pension payments:

http://safkorea.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/korean-pension-guide-for-foreigners.pdf

Look at the blue box on page 5. You'll see SA at the top of the list of exempt countries. Show this document to your principal/co-teacher/director or whatever if they don't believe that you are exempt. They can also phone the NPS at 1355 or visit the website at www.nps.or.kr to confirm this.
